How much to buy-in?

I'm sure this is probably a dumb newbie question, but what is the "correct" amount to buy-in for at a table (ie. how many bb)? Is there a general consensus, or is it preference? I would assume that your whole bankroll is not a good idea. And also, does this number change depending on whether the game is online or B&M?

I'm not much of a ring player but 50 big blinds is standard.
Internet is a bit diffrent from B&M because you can get more chips with a quick click instead of getting up to get more chips.
