I play over 1000 hours of online poker a year on my desktop and really want to get a laptop so I can use it in my living room when I get a chance...Really want atleast 1600X1200 resolution, that is by far the most important feature...beyond that I just want a decent computer no huge perks...suggestions?

1600X1200

you have just taken a monumental leap in price for this.

i sure wish all sites had gaming club type mini-view for 1024x768's. is everyone tired of hearing me say that?

Its a very good point Granny, I have never heard you say that either because I am usually not in the Zoo...any suggestions on what I should get? I am willing to spend a little money

the laptop crew will pick this up in the morning. my dell notebook is 1024x768 but it was cheap. i know nothing about high res laptops and never looked much at them once i saw the price. i'm an old hag that only needs one table and would be doing it on a typewriter if possible.

Are you looking 1600x1200 native resolution or would you settle for a smaller screen set to display 1600x1200? (You can't make a smaller resolution fill the screen, but most let you show display a resolution larger than the native display size of your system).

eMachines and IBM ThinkPads are both solid lower cost laptops. Have you considered a refurb? There are sites that offer refurbished laptops with warranties at decent savings.

I was looking into laptops recently, and this is about the best you can get for the money.

Sager 3790 (http://pctorque.com/3790.php)

Check the forums on the site as well, they can help you find exactly what you need.

Are you smoking crack? This is not how laptop displays work, and IBMs are some of the most expensive you can buy. The laptop you are looking for is the Dell 8600 customized to include WUXGA+ display. Done.

I would recommend a wide screen like HPs 15.4
HP Pavilion zx5180us Photosmart Notebook PC
I am using the HP compaq and its great.
HP are better value than Dell [+look much better], IBM are the best but for business and travel.

This one should definetely do. You are probably looking at $1400-1500 or so.

I believe he is syaing that even if the laptop's LCD is less than 1600X1200, one can have a virtual desktop that is larger. you can get to the parts of the desktop that is not displayed by moving the mouse to that edge of the screen. This, however, sucks in trying to multitable. It's better to have overlap than tring to do this.

Regarding Thinkpads being low cost laptops. This is plain wrong. Thinkpads (which in my opnions are the best made laptops avaible) are the most expensive when compared to other brands with similar configurations.

I agree with Buster. I bought that laptop about 2 months ago and I am very happy with it. Good battery life, great looking screen and runs smooth as can be. Like he said, just make sure you get the WXUGA screen. It will bring up the base price by about $150 or so, but its the only upgrade you need if you are solely playing poker.

You could get a base model and the WUXGA for about $1000 if you wait for the right deal and coupons, if not on a whim you could get it for $1200.

The 9200 is a good upgrade from the 8600, taking you from 15.4" widescreen to the new 17" widescreen. Again, make sure you upgrade to the WUXGA to get the 1920 x 1200. A 17" laptop is BAD ASS (HiatusOver ended up buying the 9200 last night actually).

I'm telling you that the Sager is a much better laptop than the 8600. You may be able to save $100-200 with the dell, but in tearms of quality and performance the Sager can't be matched. Upgrade to the WUXGA screeen and you can 4 table no porblem.

I bought the 9200 laptop on the Dell 25% off coupon. Best 1900 I ever spent. The 17" screen is awesome, and you can fit 4 tables comfortably, or 6 tables with minimal overlap. The resolution is at 1920x1200.

Plus it looks great to have a 17" widescreen monitor when watching DVDs.

How's the battery life for a 17"?

No, he's right. I am smoking crack.

On my laptop, the LCD screen is completely filled at 1280x1024. I can, however, jack it up to 1600x1200. I thought that the software was resizing the desktop to fix the smaller resolution due to the quality.

It seems, however, that my laptop just supports 16x12 badly and the display driver stretches the smaller res to fill the screen.

Talk about getting off on the wrong foot on a forum. Is it too late to re-register under a different name?

I'm wondering this as well. The reason I like the 8600 is because you can put an extra battery in the bay.

guys, back at the end of october when there was that insane 50% dell notebook deal (which I missed), someone explained that these kind of mad sales take place pretty much quarterly in order to help Dell's bottom line.

Can someone verify this or maybe predict how long to wait before I plunk down for a top-of-the-line notebook?

Cause the one I'm pricing now is about 2k and I'd love to get several hundred dollars off it.

it really depends on how badly you need it. if you don't need it right away, just wait for a good deal to come up. i got in on the 8600 wuxga deal u've mentioned, it's a great bargain, but i still find things are a bit small at only 15.4 screen. perhaps 17" laptop is the way to go?

bisonbison

Oh, I'm willing to wait a month or two, but I was just curious if it was quarterly cause that'd mean the end of January might see similar offers.

I'm in the same boat as bison. If I hear rumor that a 50% coupon will come even in the next 6 months I can wait.
