See, I've been a rap/hiphop fan my whole life (which, granted, hasn't been THAT long). But nowadays I find myself disillusioned with the scene, as I find that fewer and fewer artists are putting out really good stuff. In fact, 99% of the rap/hiphop on the radio is truly unlistenable.

But I'm a big music fan, and I was sick of hearing my same music over and over, so I decided to branch out.... and I've found that old soft-rock (or what I used to refer to as 'old white people music') really tickles my fancy.

Right now, I'm currently listening to the greatest hits cds of the following artists/groups:

The Eagles
Hall & Oates
The Doobie Brothers
Chicago (their earlier stuff (which is flat-out fantastic), not their smarmy 80's power ballad stuff)
Simon & Garfunkel
The Beatles

Hopefully that should kind of give you a vague idea of the kind of music I'm liking. I really like a good melody and nice instrumentals. I don't like the hard-rock stuff. The problem now is that I'm kinda running out of more stuff to listen to. So please, suggest away.

Try some of the guys who made it all possible for modern R&B.

Start with Muddy Waters. He's the best.

Enjoy!

Steely Dan
Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young)
Fleetwood Mac

A Steely Dan greatest hits album probably won't do them justice - I recommend Pretzel Logic or Katy Lied, but everything up to Gaucho is good.

Queen.

really, they weren't afraid to try & incorporate any genre (from opera to soul) in their music.

oh and "Dream On" turned me on to some of Aerosmith's pre-80's stuff (which i'm lukewarm on, it's not all goodor bad, but kind of nondescript, IMHO)...

I love the old Aerosmith stuff...basically, everything from back when they were on drugs. Their self-titled debut or "Rocks" would be good places to start. And I'll second the Queen recommendation.

If you like the beatles, make sure you check out Wings, and George Harison's solo records. I never understood wings until recently, they are so BLAND compared to the Beatles, but Paul's song writing realy matured at this stage in his life.

I also HIGHLY reccomend you check out Stevie Wonder and Parliament. Not quite soft rock, but they truely excel at what they did in the 70's!
