this is absolutely amazing to me.

i went to browse RGP and here is the front page i ran into.

i remember when spam was once every 30 posts, now it is the other way around.

i'm thinking the spikes in our numbers here include folks that have abandoned USENET. many claimed they would never read posts at 2+2, but i would wager that there are many new members and lurkers that have had to reconsider.

for those who think the mods here should be more tolerant with allowing all these "great deals" to be posted, i submit the below image for your consideration.

That's actually an advertisement for pills you can give your girlfriend so she doesn't scream so much during sex.

Aye Granny,

I gave up on RGP a long time ago. Spam is one thing, but there is no way to filter through so much of that junk. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Not to be pedantic, but RGP started collapsing when AOL was activated in 1995, and something like four million people were added to the internet overnight. That brought in quite a few fine contributors like the 2+2 people, Doyle Brunson, and many other, but the spam soon began to overwhelm us, and many players who had previously contributed daily found that it just took too much time to winnow the chaff.

This helped raise the spam percentage. As well, there were people like ol' "Doug" -- anyone remember him? -- who spent his days abusing regular contributors as shills for the cardrooms because, he claimed, the game was unbeatable, which he knew from personal experience.

the recent flood is a by-product of the growth of internet poker and the inability to moderate because of the nature of usenet. it is unrelated to AOL, and perfectly correlates with the creation and growth of affiliate markets.

not to be pedantic tho....

I'm half tempted to put the picture of that screen as my wallpaper. There's some pathetic elegance to it, like a commentary on the entire internet.

Yeah Granny, one of oldest posts on there from 3 years back was about a trip to LV. This was way before I turned to 2+2 as my poker base. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

A few good friends of mine still post on there, but I have definitely given up on RGP. The convuluted and abusive nature of RGP just made it a forum for people to insult others rather than a place of reasonable discussion.

Unless there is something BARGE or with Gary Carson's name on it, I won't read it anymore. Even then there's enough in those posts alone to drive me nuts. I understand why Gary Carson won't post here, or a lot of big name poker players, but I wish they would. There's so much (and much better might I add) poker literature all around here on 2+2 that it would make for great posts.
