You could have gone all-in preflop to try to steal what was on the table. Limpers tend to be of two sorts --huge hands that will reraise or other small pockets and maybe connectors that will fold. There is enough in the pot to be worth taking, so if you think people will let you have it then that is an option. This will leave you probably to only be called by bigger pairs, but since you are willing to push on an undercard flop bigger pairs are going to get you either way. The benefit is to hopefully avoid being called by overcards.

I probably would have played it the same way you did, hoping to hit a set or an undercard flop, just giving you some reasoning for another possible way to play the hand, which may or may not be better...i'm not sure.
