View Full Version : Best Path to 5/10?

This is my current situation.

I started with a bankroll of 450, and since coming to this forum Nov 1rst and playing Party 1/2SH I have made 800 dollars to put me at 1250 (17,000 hands)

What I did then was take 150 and put it into Stars to play the 2/4SH game, and after 2,000 hands I am at 400. I play two tables there while playing 4 tables of 1/2 at PP.

My question is, is this the best path to 5/10? Should I 4 table 1/2SH and continue to play 2/4 on Stars until my bankroll gets to around 2,200, when I would switch to playing 3/6? Or should I continue to just play 6 tables of 1/2 until my bankroll is much bigger?

I'm finding the Stars game to be very different. What did you guys do to build a role from scratch? Thanks a lot.

And thanks for everyones help, I went from a losing player to a winning player thanks you guys.

It looks like your total roll is over $1600, so I'd suggest moving it all to PS and 5-tabling the 2/4 game. As everyone keeps telling me, you need to get out of the Party 1/2 ASAP. I'd suggest staying in the 2/4 until you are comfortable there and certain you can beat it in the long haul, even if you have the bankroll to move up sooner than that. I say that because it looks like you've been a winning player for less than two months/20,000 hands and I think surviving a few 100+ BB downswings before you jump into the 5/10 will make that game a lot easier to deal with psychologically.

Your gonna want a bigger bankroll then $2200. Basically one bad run at 5-10 and your done. 1-2 6 Max at Party isn't very helpful in terms of you getting better cause the players there are just horrible. Those games are nothing like the 5-10 so it's not getting you ready for 5-10 but for building a bankroll I guess those games are pretty good.

For getting you ready for 5-10 , play 2-4 at stars and that should get you pretty close to being ready for the 5-10. 1-2 I would say just play if you're using it to build your bankroll not for getting you ready for 5-10.

Man, too many posts about this -- we don't need any more 5/10 players on Party! Well, not any more 2+2'ers /images/graemlins/smile.gif. Getting much much tougher finding a table without any tight-aggressives.

well done for not suggesting Paradise 3/6.

Man that game is tough, all 2+2ers take note and avoid.

This is very important.

At each higher level you will find better players AND a different texture. At 5/10 it is still very much a question about understanding the texture and the best way to do this is to learn by playing at different types of tables.

Dont always sit down with the loose guys creating huge pots. U can win a lot playing tight-passive guys (and whith much less variance), u just got to learn to change your own style.

Dont 4table at a place where u know excatly how to play. Try different sites, play Paradise for a week, play intercasino... Learn to quickly understand the texture.

FWIW I thought the 2/4 at stars was a lot tougher than the 5/10 at party. On the other hand, I make it a point at party to only sit at tables that have at least one total idiot, since there are so many, and also I'm just now starting out at the game and don't quite have the bankroll to play it. At stars I just sat down at whatever table there was and played.
What I did (and am still doing) to get into the 5/10 was just sit down at two tables at a time that looked soft and told myself if I lost $500, I was done (of course I moved tables and always had a full buyin.) The first shot I took, I lost the $500 pretty quick and it sucked, I then 4 tabled the 1/2 and played some full ring and won another $1000, and now I'm on my second shot and have started up +$1250 after starting down another 200. Hopefully I will run well enough to have a complete bankroll for the game, I have 290BB right now which isn't enough as I would probably still drop down if I lost the $1250. Oddly enough I found that the bigger bets were not terribly brutal, in other words I didn't really notice, but your results may vary.
Anyway, the party 5/10 is a soft, beatable game IMO from many the plays/players I have seen and regardless of whether I win or lose, it's definately worth it to move up as quick as possible, whether you just go from 1/2 at party to the 5/10, or play in other games. I mean, I would say that at at least one out of every five tables I sit at, there's some 70/40/5, and there's almost always two or three 50/2/0 guys, but there are lots of TAG's also, getting reads is a lot more important than the party 1/2 game (almost all clueless fish.)

Only reason I didn't suggest it is I'm thinking of heading back there /images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

Thanks for the posts guys.

I should clarify a few points. First, I'm not planning on heading to the 5/10 game until I have 4,000, but when I saw 'moving up' at 2,200 I was talking about to the 3/6 game.

Also, before this stint at shorthanded I had been a full ring guy, building enough of a bankroll to go to the World Heads Up Championship last year in Barcelona for the side games (I was studying in Europe anyway) and played very well in the 10/20 and 20/40 games. Unfortunatly, some very unexpected circumstances (family health) made me decide to deplete my entire bankroll.

So, I am starting again with 100, and since SH is by far the weak point of my game I figured this would be a good opprotunity. The reason I say all this is so you guys know I'm not a complete beginner /images/graemlins/grin.gif, but I still need lots of help with SH technique /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Thanks for everyones replies, extremely helpful. I think with the bankroll I have now I will start to play the 2/4 games extensively at both sites, Pokerstars and Paradise. Will be posting more in the future. Thanks again.
