I just threw that one and Soul Plane in so I could ask how these movies could ever get the financing to be made.

A lot of them just aren't entertaining to me. For instance, a lot of people like the 'The grapes of Wrath' which, i thought was horriblely boring. Citizen Kane, i'll agree was a great black and white movie. The wizard of oz, was entertaining, if watched in color. But the vast majority of black and white, or simply old movies i dislike.

Exceptions:

Lawence of arabia
treasure island
west side story
ben hur
and a few others.

They all fall into my 'old' list.

Edit: oh, my only exceptions for black and white i already listed above. Basically, color up oz, and well, that's about it.

But I own both of those, and the Usual Suspects too. You need to see all three.

I'm going to piss off a lot of people and say that, with the exception of the (then) masterful innovations in cinematography, Citizen Kane just didn't do a whole lot for me. Sure, go ahead and try to base the movie on William Randolph Hearst all you want. But to me, it just didn't work. And I love movies, although I shamefully admit to not having seen any Godfather movie, I have seen stuff like Casino and The Big Lebowski...

2001: A Space Odyssey - meh...another one where I'm sure some people love it, I just wasn't feeling it.

The Birds - If ever I thought Hitchcock was overrated, this was one of them. Not bad, but not the best I've ever seen.

IMO it is crucial to see these movies for the first time at the theatre, seriously. You hear that a lot, but that's only because it's true. In regards to the films you mention, their revolutionary cinematography work is really vital to the drama. Unfortunately that groundbreaking work is completely lost on a 27" television screen. I couldn't imagine anything more boring than watching The Birds on television.

About 25 years ago my mom belonged to a few different film clubs (which I assume are still around), and they would send her flyers and tickets for old movies that were being screened at different locations in and around the Los Angeles area. None of her friends were film freaks, so I got to go with her...thank God.

In order of priority how to fix this problem. First movie to watch listed #1. Note: only includes movies I've seen

1- Godfather I
2- Godfather II
3- Usual Suspects
4- Alien
5- Aliens

-These are all flat out excellent movies.

6- Wonderful Life (cheesy, but Stewart is able to elevate it a little bit)
7- Scarface (deeply, deeply flawed movie, but worth watching for the wretched excess and Pacino alone.)
8- Godfather III (inexcusable mediocrity following the first two)
9- Alien III (just bad)
10- Alien Resurrection (horrible)

The Birds is probably not one of Hitchcock's ten best. See North by Northwest, Vertigo, or Rear Window.

I rented The Big Lebowski last weekend when I was drunk, I had a nice discussion with the video store guy about the movie and how I need to see it. Well I never had time to see it and I even turned it in late and got a fee on it. That sucked.

I did however just see the Usual Suspects about a month ago and it was a good movie but I thought it was extremely predictible. I knew the ending in the opening scene pretty much.
