I have a bunch of driving to do in the next couple of days, and have figured out that fiddling with my ipod while driving is about the most dangerous thing ever. what songs are awesome enough to go on my driving playlist?

Hard to answer not knowing your tastes. A short list of mainstream [censored] that most people like would include Let it Bleed, Zeppelin 1, Highway to Hell, Pleased to Meet Me. I straight ahead, good rock and roll when driving. I would also include The Cars first album; its a must for me on a road trip. And good hip-hop--which, to me, seems to made specifically for listening to in a car.

"Achilles' Last Stand' by Led Zeppelin, you'll never be the same.

This will be much easier if you say what type of music you like.

Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen.

Nothing can really touch The Boss. But if you're driving at night check this one out.

Brighter Hell (live version) - The Watchmen

The Watchmen are fairly popular in Canada, but you may not have heard of them. The singer starts the live version by saying "this is a positive driving tune". Can't go wrong with that.

The Complete List of Ultimate Driving Songs starts and ends with Tom Petty, "Running Down a Dream." That song makes me want to floor it.

If you're looking for complete albums maybe Guster?

For really long drives I like the mellow stuff. Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, The Country Gentlemen, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Allman Bros, etc... Lots of country as you can see. Classical is also good.

When I get sick of the music I like to tune in the AM dial and get in touch with The Weirdos of America who rule those airwaves.

Whenever I have a long drive I always start out with the same cd, Rush 2112, play at high volumes and preferably through headphones. 2112 still ranks as my favorite all time cd, although I do follow it up with Dr Dre Chronic my second favorite cd. I listen to everything, even Johnny Cash.

Invariably I get sick of the three or four tapes I threw in the truck halfway between MA and NC, and switch over to Mike Savage for a few hours. Man, that guy is scary.

I like either mellow stuff, or balls-to-the-wall metal.

On the former, a little Garcia, Grisman and Rice, or recently some Townes Van Zandt, maybe spice things up with some Warren Zevon, or my new Tom Waits mix, or the Pogues.

Also, "Live: From Here to Eternity" by the Clash is great.

On the metal front, I usually go with Pro Pain, "Contents Under Pressure," or some Slayer, The Crown, or old Metallica.

If I'm really awake and getting antsy, time for a little Coltrane, Miles, Chopin, or Sigur Ros.

haha, i knew someone would post something like that. I haven't listened to it in years, but i liked listening to it while driving in high school. Actually, maybe i shouldn't post based on a high school opinion.

I think Cake is a damn good rock band. "Mexico" off the album 'Prolonging the Magic' is my favorite country ballad with a trumpet in it.

If you like guitar grooves, this is a great album. You won't help but bob your head to it driving down the road.

Lots of it + other FM tunes, could be heard on the Jesse James special where he and Kid Rock take a road trip to mexico. I was stoked when i was watching it and realized who it was they were playing in the background.

They kick ass.

While driving at night in New Jersey, the only appropriate song is "Open All Night" by the Boss.

[ QUOTE ]

Well, I had the carburetor, baby, cleaned and checked
With her line blown out she's hummin' like a turbojet
Propped her up in the backyard on concrete blocks
For a new clutch plate and a new set of shocks
Took her down to the carwash, check the plugs and point
Well, I'm goin' out tonight. I'm gonna rock that joint

Early north Jersey industrial skyline
I'm a all-set cobra jet creepin' through the nighttime
Gotta find a gas station, gotta find a pay phone
This turnpike sure is spooky at night when you're all alone
Gotta hit the gas, baby. I'm running late
This New Jersey in the mornin' like a lunar landscape

Now, the boss don't dig me, so he put me on the night shift
It's an all-night run to get back to where my baby lives
In the wee, wee hours your mind gets hazy
Radio relays towers, won't you lead me to my baby?
Underneath the overpass, trooper hits his party light switch
Good night, good luck. One, two power shift

I met Wanda when she was employed
Behind the counter at Route Sixty Bob's Big Boy Fried Chicken
On the front seat, she's sittin' in my lap
We're wipin' our fingers on a Texaco road map
I remember Wanda up on scrap metal hill
With them big brown eyes that make your heart stand still

Well, at five a.m., oil pressure's sinkin' fast
I make a pit stop, wipe the windshield, check the gas
Gotta call my baby on the telephone
Let her know that her daddy's comin' on home
Sit tight, little mama, I'm comin' `round
I got three more hours, but I'm coverin' ground

Your eyes get itchy in the wee, wee hours
Sun's just a red ball risin' over them refinery towers
Radio's jammed up with gospel stations
Lost souls callin' long distance salvation
Hey, mister deejay, won'tcha hear my last prayer?
Hey, ho, rock'n'roll, deliver me from nowhere

Also, for Ed's purposes, Atlantic City, also off Nebraska, would be appropriate.

You ass! I wanted to be the first to suggest the greatest driving song ever. You rock dude!

And Buster, good pick with Achilles Last Stand by the almighty Led Zeppelin. For awhile I thought I was the only one here with good taste in rock...heh

For some reason, "I Might Be Wrong" by Radiohead is like, the perfect driving song for me.

I think any song that's quiet in the beginning and then drops a beat is going to be pretty good for driving.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Aeroplane
Kansas - Carry on my Wayward Son

Both good songs, their goodness magnified cruising at 75 with the windows down.

Same. However I am very late. I haven't read the rest of the thread, but I'll add "life in the fast lane" by the eagles and "lowrider" by war even though most likely they've been mentioned.

Haven't read the others yet. Number one has to be Radar Love.
