Can any chess fans recommend a decent site to play for free against decent competition? Not looking for the "speed chess" games (like 5 minutes per side), but where the players are interested in playing a game that allows some time to think. Thanks

Play anywhere but at zone.com. They don't recognize draws by threefold repetition... Not knowing this, I sac'ed a piece with black in a losing position to force a draw and ended up having to play for over 400 more moves before losing on time.

I prefer ICC (http://www.chessclub.com) but it is pay. You could play as a guest though for free.

FICS (http://www.freechess.org/) would be my next choice.

Never liked it. Speed games are tough with no lag compensation and no pre-mousing of moves. There are also a lot of have hugely inflated ratings. It is tough to get a game with anyone higher rated than yourself. If you do and beat them, forget about a rematch, they all seem to want to protect their precious ratings.

I like Red Hot Pawn (http://www.redhotpawn.com) . It is free up to six concurrent games. The quickest games they have are 1 day per move.

In case you didn't get it yet, the answer is FICS. If you are looking to get serious, ICC.
