I generally play e4 as white.

As black, I like the Latvian Counter-Gambit (flame away /images/graemlins/grin.gif).

Against the Pirc, the Spassky System.

Against the Petroff, the Cochrane Gambit (hey, it's worked)

The From Gambit seems to work well against 1. f4.

Don't really have a defense yet as black for 1. d4, or as white against the Caro-Kann. Any suggestions?

I'm a fan of the Polish opening:
1. f3
2. g4

why not just memorize license plate numbers before a game? you could spot the winner a knight for advantage, randomize the piece placement and then play something closer to an actual game of strategy and tactics instead of "who has read more".

Any actual replies?

No, seriously, I'm going to stop studying chess altogether and just wing it.

I haven't played chess that much since I became addicted to poker, but against d4 have you tried 1. d5, 2. c5?
Can't remeber what I used to do against the caro-kahn. Seems like I always played against the sicilian, which I hate.

1.e4 for white, and you don't get to play Latvian. Main lines against almost everything else.

Sicilian vs e4
Grunfeld vs d4 (and aim for this vs c4, Nf3 lines)
From's vs f4 but rarely seen

Here's my best game (or at least biggest scalp):

Me (2204) - Novikov,I (2719)

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bc4 e6 7.Bb3 b5 8.0-0 Be7 9.Qf3 Qb6 10.Be3 Qb7 11.Qg3 Nbd7 12.Nf5 exf5 13.Qxg7 Rf8 14.Nd5 fxe4 15.Nxe7 Kxe7 16.Rad1 Qc6 17.Bg5 Bb7 18.Rd4 d5 19.Bxd5 Qxd5 20.Rxd5 Bxd5 21.Qxh7 Rac8 22.Rd1 Rxc2 23.Qf5 Be6 24.Rxd7+ Kxd7 25.Qxf6 Kc6 26.h4 Rc5 27.Qe7 Rg8 28.Qa7 Rcxg5 29.hxg5 Rxg5 30.Qxa6+ Kc7 31.Qa7+ Kc6 32.Qe3 Rg4 33.b4 Kb7 34.Qc5 Bd7 35.Qd5+ Kc7 36.Qxf7 e3 37.fxe3 Rxb4 38.Kf2 Ra4 39.Kf3 Kd6 40.Qf8+ Ke6 41.e4 Bc6 42.Qf5+ Kd6 43.Kf4 Rc4 44.g4 b4 45.Qf8+ 1-0

I worked on this line for over a year before I got to play it, with this opponent in mind. 18.Rd4 was my improvement over a game my opponent played in Cuba in 1987, and I had the position after 21.Qxh7 in my analysis. I don't expect Astro to approve. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

as White: 1.d4 and then basically the repetoire given by Richard Palliser in "Play 1.d4!"

as Black: 1.e4 -- the French
1.anything else -- the King's Indian

I'm currently learning this repetoire but I don't think I'll finish, poker is higher on the priority list right now. $$$

I have a very narrow repetoire. Used to play at the 1800 level.

As white 1. d4, aiming for London system setups (d4, Nf3, Bf4) or Colle system setups against anything that black does

As black,
against 1. d4 - Budapest defense (against 1. ... Nf6 2. c4 e5), or King Indian defense-like setups
against 1. e4 - Center counter and Caro-kann

King's Gambit is the only acceptable start for white.

With black I just wing it.

ICC: 1700 something was the highest I ever climbed in the blitz games. I mostly floated around in the mid 1600s. So I suck.

Correct, curtains owns me (though we never actually played).

But there was a British IM (International Master) who made about 15 posts. He tried to stay anonymous but disappeared after I figured out who he was. I hear he has his own poker website now though, I will have to check this.

You couldn't play the Latvian against my e4 either: Bishop's Opening, or Vienna Game/Gambit. I suspect playing 1.e4 e5 2. bc4 f5 is semi-suicidal for Black.

Anyway, I like your opening choices better than those hyperanal openings with the fianchettoed bishops. Probably those are actually better but chess is too tedious anyway IMO; may as well make it a little more exciting. So cheers to Gambits and Claassical Chess! (P.S. please take the Pirc players and King's Indian players out back and shoot them).

I just love the name of random chess moves, especially when they involve Eastern European former soviet bloc countries. is there a move called Stalin's Revenge yet, because if not I'm going to study chess and invent it. What the fu[/b]ck is a gambit anyway?

What the fuk is a gambit anyway?

A gambit is where you give up material (Usually a pawn) to get a good position. (In the opening I believe)

The reason so many people played Magic: The gathering was because it was as close to random chess as they could find.

I don't mind the Pirc players, the Qe2 lines are exciting as hell for white.

I can play about anything except d4 comptently as white, and as black either go sicilian dragon, e6/b6 junk against white or QID/Nimzo stuff against d4.

And go play on FICS, it's free and good fun.

I really liked Magic: started in Tempest or the edition prior to it, and loved the speed decks over the next few editions. Put it on the shelf when I realized that they would forever be changing the rules, and when I saw that the pace with which they came out with new editions was so brisk that to keep up would have required more dedication than I was willing to put forth.

Still have my Sligh, and black, and green speed decks, and another deck or two I concocted and another deck or two now forgotten about;-) It was fun; just really wish Wizards didn't have to churn out so many new editions so fast to make money.

Whilst I agree entirely that this is why they do it, it is also pretty much required at the higher levels to keep the game fresh.

It is no coincidence that many of the better poker players who post here are ex pro-tour players on the MTG circuit.

I play the french against e4. against d4 I play usually the nimzo-indian.

I don't study much theoretics of the game. I usually just work through puzzle books. they seem to help me much more. And they are a bit more entertaining to go through than the theory books.

I probably shouldn't tangle with a flame warrior, but I think this is an area of misunderstanding for people who don't play competitive chess.

First of all, no one becomes a much better player just by memorizing openings. Chess is too vast to memorize everything, and it is easy to put your booked-up opponent "on his own" very early in the game.

At higher levels, keeping your openings up to date can be a lot of work. But the player willing to work harder is rewarded with a competitive advantage. I don't see much difference between this and studying hand histories, keeping player notes, and using pokertracker.

Colle-Zuckertort as white (colle d4,e3 set up with b2 and Bb2 at some point).

Benoni (yuck, I only got to play it once as it was a new opening system change) or Sicilian Accelerated Dragon (dude, it *kinda* looks like a dragon) as black.

But of course I retired once I started playing chess /images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

Oh, and I'm a 1800 fish at chess anyway so it doesn't really matter what I played.
