Well, basically, a rebuy is when a player can purchase an additionnal amount of chips for extra cash. For example, some casinos offer a 30$ buy-in and a 30$ rebuy during the first 3 levels of play. You get 500 chips at the start and 500 more when you rebuy. In some tournaments, you can only rebuy when you are broke, or when you are under a certain level (like below 200 in chips).

Add-ons are also offered sometimes. An add-on is basically a rebuy that any player can take, regardless of their stack.

The basic strategy is to always rebuy (or add-on) when the cash value of the chips you get is greater than the value of ones you got at the start of the tournament.

For example, if you entered a 30$ tournament and got 500 in chips and you are offered 500 more for an extra 20$, you should take it, since you are paying less for the same number of chips. If you were to pay 40$ for the same 500 chips, you should not rebuy.

Of course, other concepts can offset this strategy like your skill level compared to the field. Always be more inclined to rebuy when you feel you amongst the better players and refrain to rebuy when the field is better than you.
