You need an option for "You know how to do it, but are too damn lazy," because that's me.

Changing brakes should be an option as well.

I really don't see how it's worth the hassle. You can take it to Jiffy Lube for $25. Why would you even bother?

$25 is about $10-$15 too much for an oil change.

so it's like $10 dollars for the oil and filter? You don't think someone doing it for you is worth 10-15?

Where is the "No, I pay people to do stuff like that" option? I know how to do an awful lot of stuff I have no desire to do, and thanks to a lot of things (none of which is inheritance) I don't have to do most of them.

This poll has been brain washed by those miller commercials espousing the greatness of being a big fat drunk male with powertools (because powertools and a twelve pack go so well together.)

Hell, I pay to have my groceries delivered so I dont have to go to the store. I damn sure am paying someone the $5 extra I'd save by doing it myself, so that I dont have to.

No, because I live in an apartment.

No option that reads: "I'd rather pay someone else to do it."

I can't tell you how many times I've had Jiffy Lube guys leave the hoses unattached on my car. Plenty of times the gas line was spilling pools of gas all over my engine before I realized it. I'm amazed the car never caught on fire.

I used to have a Ford Escort. Still have a scar from sliding my hand up to change the oil filter -- and I was moving pretty slowly and carefully. New cars are built with everything very close together.

This poll sucks, for reasons already stated.

You neglected to include: No. Why would I change it myself when it's ridiculously cheap to have someone else do it and my time is more valuable than that.

I remember a joke that went around a few years ago, comparing the way women and men change the oil in their cars.

For the Women it was basically a three step process: Take car to Jiffy Lube, drink free coffee, 15 minutes later write a check.

For the Men it was a 52 step process that spanned over two days, required at least two six packs of beer, and some cat litter to mop up the oil stain in the driveway.

However, the Men did save $10 on the oil change if you didn't count the cost of the beer.

Myself, I pay Jiffy Lube $24.95 and change the oil religiously every 3,000 miles. I could do it myself, and have in the past, but when I can bill a client $120 an hour or save $15 changing the oil on my car, it doesn't make good sense does it. And on weekends, taking the time to change my oil versus going and playing poker, well ... maybe I should change the oil on weekends.

I agree with the others that your poll is flawed.

I just bought a new car a few months ago and all my scheduled maintenance is free for 3 years or 36k miles. This includes oil changes, tire rotations, brake service, filters, etc. I am definitely taking advantage of that deal.

Thank you.

And to everyone else, I was just askin a question.
I don't mind paying less to do it myself when I can save some money.
But if the $15 here and there doesn't bother you, I don't think anyone will blame you.

You can change your own oil in like five or ten minutes, max. There's no way going to Jiffy Lube is faster. Heck, even driving there one way, you've already probably used up more time than you would have used up changing it yourself.

And you don't have to have incompetents screwing around in your car in the process(or smearing Armor All all over the place even when you told them not to). Unless you count yourself of course heheh.

The biggest pain in the ass about changing your own oil is disposing of the old oil. You have to bottle the mess up, put it in your car and take it to the recycling center.

If you are a scumbag I guess you could just pour it in the neighbors yard or down the storm drain, but that would be un citizenly like.

So it only takes 5 to 10 minutes to change my oil? Really?

So where do I get the oil and filter? Don't I have to go somewhere and buy that? And after I've changed the oil, what do I do with the old oil and filter? Does proper disposal of that require zero minutes?

Yeah, just an extra 10 minutes before I go to work. I can see myself in my suit, crawling underneath the car to get to the oil pan drain plug. Simple process really.

One thing overlooked about changing oil is the product used. It'll cost you $25 at Jiffy Jube for a "regular" oil change. However, ask them for full synthetic and you're looking at $40 min up to the shop that I frequent who charges $55. I can do a full synthetic change for 25-30 realistically taking an hour between the change, my inspection, and any minor changes/repairs/fluid top offs. I can also go 5k-6k between changes. Add the fact that syntheic is molecularly a better lubricant and you have +EV situation.

Yeah I hate being raped for oil changes, costs me about $40+ each time too.
