AAAxxxx
or
666xxxx?

Do the pair of aces play low or high?

Aces are low. That said, the best five cards play, so the winner would probably be determined by the other cards, not by who has the lowest trips.

I didn't think out a well detailed question. I assumed aces played low as pairs as well. Everyone at the table was POSITIVE they were high in this case.

Yeah, I think that it completely depends on the other 4 cards. If hands are AAA2345 and 6667788, then AAA2345 obviously wins. If it's AAA2233 vs 6665432, then 6665432 wins. However, I'm not a big razz player, so I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's how it'd work out.

Yup, 6665432 wins.

That's a 6-5 low.

The crew I used to play with thought that way too, but I eventually convinced them of the error of their ways. There's a crowd here in town that plays high-low split, cards speak, no qualifier. They play that you have to use the same five cards for both high and low, and if you have the best both ways, but with different cards, you win the high only. These are decent people, but I don't know where the hell they came up with that.

We don't know what the x's represent, so we have no way of knowing.

Think of low hands like a number, that will make it so much easier. Take your five lowest cards and make them into numerals:

75,432
87,531
65,321
76,432

Now, figuring out which is lowest is simple, because the 1 represents an ace (always), and you are looking at a five digit number which is easy to sort from highest to lowest.

so you are saying that aces as a pair are always the highest pair? (just to clarify.) it's a pretty interesting in theory, I think, if not likely to come up in practice. say the hands are:

AAAA234
KKKK234

are the kings lower? what about in lowball draw? same, I'd assume?

KK234 beats
AA234?

(this is something that definitely could happen in practice, I guess.)

You're talking about the home game, right? If the showdown were between these two hands, AAAA4 would take high, and KK432 would take the low. In any other game, the AAAA hand would sweep.
