inspired by a post on here i saw that said "As far as I know, there is no lieing allowed in a poker room. "

do you lie at the table? and in what manner? (explained in a minute)
do you think it's ethically permissible to lie at the table? why or why not?

the way i see it there are two kinds of lies at the poker table, the first of which isn't really a lie anyway.
First case: someone asks what you have and you say "the nuts" for the whole tabl eot here, or "quads" or something else. the point is that whatever you say the table chuckles and knows that what you said should be taken with a grain of salt. you are lying, but not with the intent of having others believe you

say after you do this, you turn to your neighbor an dsay "i really had top two pair" in a secretive we're buddies and i'm telling you kinda way. you are lying with the intent of decieving the other players.

I lie all the time at the table, the second kind of lying. I lie in a 'we're comrades as players at the poker table, but inside i want all of your money, every single cent.'

i don't make a practice of lying outside the casino, but i have no moral qualms about lying at the poker table.

People lie all the time using non-verbal signals -- unnecessary grimaces, unneeded hestiation to "think" about a play, tossing chips into the pot forcefully or weakly to create an impression of strength or wekaness, etc. When you consider that poker is a game that may be played entirely with hand signals and actions -- no verbal expression is required -- lying is not only accepted, it's expected. I give far less credence attention to what people say at the poker table than I do in most other situations. I actually laughed out loud when the poster on the other thread made the statement about lying.

You can get in more trouble at a cardroom for telling the truth than you can for lying. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It's actually against the rules to tell the truth in certain situations. You can be penalized in a tournament for saying what your cards are during the play of a hand. You can say or represent that you have anything except what you actually have.

Misrepresentation at the table is not lying, it is bluffing.
