View Full Version : I bluffed at live 4/8

in SoCal.

this old lady is up like $800. Limping with any two and they just keep hitting. Amazing rush of cards. Will cap the turn with middle two pair, and chase runner runner flushes, straights and stuff. The kind of player who makes these games good.

So I fold for a little over an hour, other than a tens full hand where I got four-way action on my river cap. Board was KQJQT and I bet you can't guess what the other players had...

Anyhow, I limp behind a bunch of limpers in CO with T /images/graemlins/heart.gif 9 /images/graemlins/heart.gif.

The old lady raises in BB. The first time I've seen her raise PF. Seven players to the flop.

Flop is J /images/graemlins/spade.gif 8 /images/graemlins/spade.gif 6 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif.

Old lady checks. Horrible old man bets, doesn't figure to have much here a lot of the time. Two fold, one call, I raise, one cold call. Old lady folds /images/graemlins/shocked.gif. Old man calls. Decent guy calls one more. Four to the turn:

K /images/graemlins/spade.gif.

Checks to me, I bet, all fold. I flip up my cards. Old lady looks seriously pissed, saying she folded AK. I go outside for a smoke.

Why do you bet turn here??

Did you expect all 3 of them to fold with a 3 flush on the board?

Why show your cards here? Your just giving out free information.

to get more action, i mean by God, they all folded on the turn.

I agree this is a rare good time to show your cards. Especially since this is a bluff move you won't often make. Next time you check-raise the turn with top set, no one will believe you and you'll get more action.

Showing bluffs can also put players on tilt. These B&M tactics are much different than online, where no one cares who you are or notices anything about your play.

I'm glad you didn't get banned for the picture you posted the other day of that beast, but I'm glad that its gone.

I like the card flipping tactic here. You want people to see that they laid down a winner. If the old lady tilts here that could be gold mine for you.

By the time I left, 5 or 6 hours later, she had burned through all her white chips ($100s), and had about $60 on the table. After witnessing some of her runner-runners, I whispered to the guy next to me, "She's going to leave here broke." I guess I've seen it before.

I don't know that I agree with showing your cards here. You are playing 4/8 in california, when would you ever lack for action?

Evidently, when you bet a T-high on the turn with a K,J, and three spades on the board, and everyone folds.

This happens one out of ten times, at best. Nine out ten times everyone calls, including the people who folded preflop...

Poker is a game of partial information. Yes, you will get more action. However, its doubtful you'll be able to bet for value on the river again and get a pot cheap.

I wouldn't have shown my cards. Keep stealing until they keep you honest. When you finally do get caught, there is a deeper impression on them as they wonder just how many pots you've stolen that lasts longer than if you just show your hand. Think about how you react to both situations. Someone showing a bluff, or someone who hasn't shown down a hand in a lot of pots, yet is dragging them. Then gets caught. Think about it.

Doing it to 'encourage' action is a poor reason for doing it. There's plenty of action. If you're not getting enough action, you're not betting/raising enough hands in certain spots.

i hate this turn bet. i also dont like showing my cards, but if you absolutely have to (and i understand that some people do), this seems like a fun time to do it.

actually, you just changed my mind, I don't like it either. I can pull a move here and there, still be stacking chips, and when I do get caught it would probably still put the old lady on tilt. I'm a pretty stubborn guy, I don't change my mind easily. Learning is fun.

When the person last to act on this board raises the flop, don't you automatically put him on a flush draw?

Well, yes, some people who actually THINK when they play will "put you" on a flush draw... but does that describe the majority of players in a 4-8 game?? But even if these people think you have a flush, are they really going to fold their top pair, or single spade when they picked up a flush draw??

raise preflop, and I'm surprised no one else said that

River2Pair

now why in the world would I raise with a ten-high drawing hand, behind a bunch of limpers?

Yeah, good point... I was actually thinking this too, but I was just commenting on the "bluff" since it was in the title of the post.

1. steal the button
2. tie them to their hands when you flop a draw
3. because T9s (ten high) is a lot better than a lot of their limping hands (like A4, which is ace-high). it wins 19.8% of the time hot and cold against 6 random hands, which is better than the following hands (only 26 of the other 168 starting hands fair better than it):

okay, thanks. i see you put some work into that.

I hardly ever raise any of those hands either, except maybe open-raising in late position with some of the pairs, and AT.

I don't use Pokertracker, because it doesn't work with a Mac, so I don't know my percentages, but does it sound like I'm not raising enough preflop?

nope. if the button never folded it would be a different

beyond 1 or 2 opponents, mid-strength connected and suited hands benefit more from added contributors than they suffer from added competitors, since you're unlikely to win with a T or a 9.

sthief09
12-06-2004, 03:42 AM
winning with a T or 9 is important. against 6 random opponents, T9s wins 5.5% more than its fair share and 54s wins .5% more than its fair share. the difference there is mostly pairs

bisonbison
12-06-2004, 03:54 AM
hmmm. I guess what I'm saying is T9s is a better LP raise than 54s for the slight value of its pair outs, but T9s doesn't mind playing against 8 for a raise. In fact, all the better than 6.

Did you post this so we can tell you how cool we think you are? Did you take off your sunglasses before or after you made this fantastic play?
