Lots of types of alternative out there. You really have to be more specific. Garage-y, country-ish, new wavish, etc.

I'm not sure exactly how you define 'alternative', but I would recommend The Libertines and The Auteurs if you're not already familiar with them.

The Garden State soundtrack is awesome. I'd also recommend Reconstruction Site by The Weakerthans.

Surfer Rosa is their best.

Edit: You said garage/new wave-ish. Pixies came to mind first. Check out Fugazi (Steady Diet of Nothing LP), and of course Janes Addiction's Nothing Shocking.

Saw them once in an old warehouse in Portland, ME (this was in 1993, I believe). They played with a fun band called Lezbo Vampires. Almost five hours of insanity.

Steady Diet is best for the uninitiated. 13 Songs is quite good and there are tons of bootlegs/imports available. Very cool band.

You should be listening to:

Coheed and Cambria
The Music
Queens of the Stone Age
The Pixies
Guster
Mazzy Star
The Hives
The Strokes

These are starters...decent mix of the new and the old. I'll try to think of more. But you should have these artists.

These might be a little heavier than what you're looking for, but great nonetheless:

Mudvayne
Slipknot
Tool
A Perfect Circle

Linkin Park's whole Meteora album pretty much kicks ass. Hoobastank's The Reason, although a bit on the pop/mainstream side, is really good.

Gayest recommendation you'll get:

The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/m/magnetic-fields/69-love-songs.shtml)

You'll notice the initial request included "pop" as well. If someone makes a list of dozens of groups I would doubt most people are going to look at it and go "oh yeaaaaaah each and every one of those on the list KICKS ASS."

The Black Keys. It's new, but sounds old. Fantastic stuff.

And I agree with the folks who hate Nirvana. I'm not going to say it's bad, because who the hell am I to say, but I can't stand them.
