I'm on my second pot and it's only 5:30. I probably drink 12-15 cups a day. How unhealthy is this, aside from the obvious "that's too much coffee"?

Yea although that's not actual cups, it's cups according to the pot, which is likely a literal measurement. Basically one cup of coffee for me, is 2 cups according to the pot.

yeah that is way off. I fill up a one of those traveler mugs every morning. Its probably 2.5 cups but the pot says like 4. I wouldn't drink that much at all, and especially not after noon.

Cups = servings, not the english cup.

1 cup = 8 ounces.

Well, think about it. It's a burnt bean, ground up and infused into water. It's highly acidic, has a ton of caffeine in it, and is a known carcinogen. It also dehydrates you, which is trouble for a number of other things as well.

If you're really interested, here's a great book on every drug known to the civilized world. Written by Andrew Weil, the doctor with the weird beard who shows up occassionally on PBS. Written very factually, neither pro nor con.

That's nothing. I went to a grad sschool with a guy who probably hit 30cpd for fifteen years. Prostate problems eventually made him cut back to 5-6.

And roughly how many times per day do you punch yourself in the nuts?

Kidding aside--the smoking is probably about a thousand times worse for you than the coffee.

Wow, you're an enthusiastic coffee drinker.
I would say don't drink coffee & smoke on an empty stomach, or you'll feel like you're opening up an ulcer. Which you probably would be.
I think it's a good idea to drink a cup of water for every cup of coffee. Preferably all at once, after you finish the coffee. I have no scientific basis for this belief but it is a Viennese tradition and they know coffee pretty well. I mean they even have a style of coffee named after them.

I used to think I drank too much coffee. But at my last job I knew some people who would drink maybe 25-35 cups per day. These people used those gigantic plastic coffee mugs and refilled numerous times throughout the day. They seem fairly healthy, plus there are an awful lot of old people who still drink alot of coffee (not 25-35 cups, maybe 8-10 per day).

As far as what is or is not healthy, who knows. My coffee consumption is about in line with yours. I figure the "official" healthy amount would be no more than 1 or 2 cups per day or some ridiculously low number like that.
