View Full Version : So this is what racism feels like

Being that I'm a whitey, and live in North America, I've never experienced being the object of racism, at least not until I started playing poker online.
My empire screen name suggests to some people (who aren't fans of a particular tv show) that I am of Asian descent.

Now this doesn't happen all that often, but once every couple of weeks when I beat someone in a sizable pot, they will come back with "gook", "chink", "go back to China" or my favorite to date: "I hope your kids get SARS and die" - actually not that far fetched since I'm about 2 hours from toronto.
This always makes me insanely angry, mainly because I imagine how I'd feel if I was indeed asian. Worse, not once during any of these incidents has anyone else at the table stepped up to call out the racist involved. Up until now, my response has basically been to call the person a racist and try to question their attitude, invariably getting nowhere.
I'd really like to send a transcript of the chat to support, but being that I am on Empire and the player is most likely on PP, I'm not sure whether this would be effective.
I know that some people are going to suggest that I just turn off the chat and ignore, but I don't think that is going to cut it for me, and the chat is often very revealing/entertaining.

So, any suggestions as to what I should do in these cases?

where's that retard from the other thread who pretends to be asian and replaces all his Rs with Ls when you need him?

I believe mail to "info" at any.party.skin.dot.com, is received by party support with copy to related skin. This should be the case or it would be very difficult to impossible for any network (Party, Prima, VC) to address player or table issues.

So, any suggestions as to what I should do in these cases
Do like me and create a different problem:
Female names for poker and all other names for message boards. Just be prepared to be hiton when playing.. it happens to me at least once a month. Occassionally, it's a 2+2er or pokertracker user that's hitting on me /images/graemlins/wink.gif

You should just send the email.

Why do you even read the chat? It serves no purpose.

Do you mean at B&Ms or at home games? Do the casinos do anything about this type of behavior?

I doubt trying to engage the offender will do any good, but I'd at least send a letter off to support. I haven't seen any racist stuff at the table myself (someone who thought my screen name sounded French called me a "beret" once, but that's not even close). What does get me is the constant barrage of homophobic remarks I see online.

Meh, being the only Asian family within a 2 sq. mile block in an all white Texas town we got our share of racism via mail / 8's on lawn / mailbox destructions / spray painting the house / etc.

The first few times we reported it to the police, but honestly what can they do? Drive a patrol car around the neighborhood a few more times?

Afterwards my family and I just ignored it, as is what should be done about the Party chat. Reporting the offendors to Party & skins won't resolve anything, you're better off just muting the person. Also, I tend to notice the chat on Party is much more hateful and vulgar than other poker sites but I don't know why.

Racism is imbedded deep inside an individual, either through cultural or by family upbringing and any slap on the wrist is not going to change anything or just make them more hateful. Also, whether you're white, black, Asian, Hispanic, etc. all peoples are racist to some extent (whether conciously or not), it's just that some hide it better than others.

Yes, my alias is PuertoKid on the poker sites I play. People assume I'm Puerto Rican (I'm not--but I lived a long time in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain and have family there). I hear nasty comments all the time ("go back to Puerto Rico, spic"). The "go back to Puerto Rico" comment actually gets a laugh at the table when I respond "I am in Puerto Rico--you think the internet only works in the US?"

The only people that are dumb enough to be saying this kind of crap at the poker tables are most likely not very good at poker. IMO, it's better to just toughen up and ignore the comments (don't turn off chat, just dont pay attention to them) then it is to send an e-mail to Party and possible get them banned, thus losing their valuale contribution to the fish pool.

Not to defend racism, but people these days need to toughen up and learn to deal with being offended a few times in life. Life isn't all happy and pleasant. It's harsh and cruel, and the tough survive.

I say engage the guy in his conversation. As long as you can maintain your cool it will usually turn out well. This has worked for me.

Don't call names. Just ask questions that get him talking about it.

"So, you don't like anyone that doesn't look just like you?"
or "It must be difficult to lose to someone that you consider ethnically inferior."

Usually his comments will get worse. Keep your clean in case you eventually report him, or someone else at the table does.

Positive things will happen.
* The racist will start tilting, most likely.
* If you keep your comments intelligent you'll see people get on your side. Maybe not immediately, but eventually.

If the racist tilts, take some of that money. Just don't alter your game.

If the table gangs up on him, he'll probably leave.

If he continues with the racist tirade report him after he has dug grave. A stream of comments will be better when you report.

This should definitely qualify as "worse."

I play 8 tables at once. The chance of my even seeing a particular comment, let alone having time to respond to it in a way worth a damn, is extremely small. And to be honest, if it's not even involving me, it's even less likely to catch my eye or make me try to find the time to waste on it.

It's kind of a pain sometimes. Sometimes there actually is an interesting conversation at a table, or it has nice people, but I usually just don't have the time to chat online when playing poker. I'm sure there are other players chatting to their friends and family in real life while they play, eating, watching t.v., whatever. Anyone ignored on purpose or by accident online shouldn't read any meaning into it.

Add the bigots to your buddy list! These guys are not too bright and may even be bothered by your asianess and play even worse than normal. And you get the satisfaction of beating the not very nice people.

Who really cares what people say? Especially idiots. I would just ignore or discuss something else. No sense in feeding their fire. And why report them? You can turn off your chat their chat if you don't want to listen to them. It is sad that the best someone can comment on is your race, but who cares. I'd be much more offended if they said my play was bad and it was true. Move on and let those people live in their insecure world. You'll be better off not responding as you aren't going to change their mind and the only thing that happens is you will get pissed and thrown off your game...exactly what they want to happen!!

If party banned all the tards that make rude comments to women we'd all lose .5/100. C'mon, these really are the dumbest/worst players on the site.

Ignore them and take their money.

I was playing recently at a NL table and getting terrible starting hands. My VP$IP was at about 8% after an hour. This moron starts to berate me about what a terrible player I am, I have no game, would anyone actually call me if I ever bet ? etc..... I ignored him. I left after about 2 hours and was down 3 BB. Moron was down 45 BB .

Two days later the same guy sits at my table. My stack is about triple the buy-in when he sits down. After about 15 minutes at the table, the moron starts talking about what a good player I am and how he has played against me before. I again ignore him. An hour later I left the table. Moron was down 33 BB.

Again......Ignore them and take their money.....you want these people at your table.

Two Questions:

1. What the hell is 8's on the lawn, and how is this racist towards Asian Americans?

2. What the hell is your screenname? if it's meow meow, that's odd they reply with racist comments about Asians, but if it's like C_U_On_the_Yellow_River, then I can see why they get that.

A wonderful thing about poker is that it provides equal opportunity to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, or appearance. I know of no other vocational arena for which this is as true.

I have found that the absence of discrimination at the poker table reduces the impact of occasional prejudiced comments. I also recognize that the offensive individual is trying to upset me and his comments may not even reflect his feelings toward my perceived ethnic group. I have also noticed that the offenders are generally poor poker players who have recently contributed to my bankroll. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
