I am headed out to St Louis next week and will be there from Monday afternoon to Sunday morning. Need some suggestions on things to see and do when Im not doing the work I am there for. I would especially like to know the must visit eating spots.

I went there a couple weeks ago....KC Masterpiece is pretty damn good, also Buffalo Wild Wings (I think both are chains).....There's an area called Westport that has a comedy club and a couple bars that were fun, $1 beers on Friday night and there are a couple pretty good restaurants there too.

I forgot about the Landing in downtown St Louis, pretty interesting area with a few bars and restaurants.

Check out Schlafly's downtown. Really good brewpub.

Also, be sure to eat some toasted ravioli while you're in the Lou. For some reason it's much better there than anywhere else.

Where were the $1 beers on Friday night? What part of St Louis will the orig poster be staying?

Thank you,

The $1 beers were at America's Pub and Margarita Mama's at Westport in Maryland Heights

Damnit. There's an America's Pub in Westport, in Kansas City. Sorry.

If you'll be downtown, try the Landing. Lotta good bars there. The better cardrooms are out west thought at Harrah's and Ameristar casinos.

East St. Louis is beautiful this time of year.

Jake,

Can you give me a good (reasonably priced) BBQ in St Louis?

[/ QUOTE ] I used to really like a place down on Manchester, but they sold out. I think SuperSmokers is o.k. It's a chain now, but still o.k. And FYI, pulled pork is the big BBQ thing in St Louis. Kinda like brisket is big in Texas and ribs some other places.

Stay away from Bandana's whatever you do. It's awful corporate BBQ at its worst. I mean what kind of place cuts its brisket into little cubes? Very weird.

Someone on the "Best BBQ" thread awhile back posted another place that I never heard of that might be worth trying.

If you like wannabe-ghetto, sure. Real-ghetto has better things to offer, as will the rest of STL.

I just love that scene in Vacation when they get lost there.

If you get out to St. Charles to play poker, try Pio's. The whole catfish is very good. Their blue cheese salad is excellent as well as the toasted ravioli.

St. Louis has some good food. Lots of flavor, lots of fat and calories. It used to be one of the most overweight cities in America. I don't know if that is still true, but I wouldn't doubt it, if so.

I was born in St. Louis and lived there for about 25 years, before deciding it was not exciting enough and relocated to wild and crazy Dayton, OH. I think St. Louis was ranked 3rd in a list of most dangerous cities..nice job!!! Look out Detroit, St. Louis is coming for you next!!!!

Everytime I make a trip to St. Louis, I have to stop and order about 5 large pizzas from Imo's Pizza, my favorite ever...not sure if others feel the same (maybe just reminds me of the old days), but it is "St. Louis" style pizza at its best.

While you are there, maybe you could suit up for the Rams defensive line...you have as good a chance of tackling somebody as they do.

Which IMO is the same as pizza at its worst. It's like a big cracker with pizza toppings. Oh well, to each his own. It's very popular there.

Try the Big Bang Bar in the Landing. It is a dueling piano bar. Tons of fun on the weekends. The $6 cover is worth it. The beer is inexpensive.

For poker, the President Casino is a couple of blocks away on the landing. I have not been there since they expanded the card room. Probably better options are Ameristar and Harrah's about twenty miles away. Nightlife on the landing through the week is very hit or miss. You should be able to pick up a copy of the Riverfront Times in a bar or restaurant. That would list what bands are playing where.

Free entertainment is plentiful close to downtown. The Zoo, Science Museum and Anheuser Busch Brewery tours are all free. The Arch is a small fee but I think the downstairs museum is free. Check out the metrolink for cheap transportation.

Be very careful as there are often fleas, crooks and beggars roaming the streets. Much violent crime downtown seems to be 'covered up'.

St Louis Link (http://www.cityspin.com/stlouis/bestbets/bestbets.htm) The preceeding link will detail additional activities.

Thank you,
