More often than not I fall behind early in my poker session, and I need to make a late run to try to get back to even and hopefully above for the session. Is this a common experience? Is there such a thing as "warming up" for poker players as for athletes? If so, does anyone play lower buy-in SNGs to start their session and move up to their normal buy-in after "warming up"?

It sounds like a form of tilt going on here, since there really should be no reasonable explanation for your play to be improved as you go (logically the opposite would be more likely, with you playing worse as you get tired and lose concentration later in the session).

If you burn an hour or more playing 10+1 SNGs before jumping up to 100+10 it sounds like you are forfeiting quite a bit of profit, but then again - if whatever you're doing helps you from tilting I guess you should continue doing it.
