View Full Version : Party & Stars Structural Differences = Problems for Me?

Any advice or direction appreciated.

I've been playing the Stars $15+1 Turbos. After 500 games I am ITM 43% with an ROI of 21%. That is fine, but I know I have a lot of work to do to improve my game.

However, after 250 Party $11 SNGs, I'm only in the money about 35% of the time, with an ROI of 8%. Yes, I understand these sample sizes are small, but I don't attribute the differences in my ITM/ROI to 'running bad'.

My 1st thought is that I am not correctly adjusting to the structural differences between Stars and Party??? At Stars you get 1500 chips and it is 5min/round, whereas at Party you get 800 chips and 10 hands/round.

My thinking is that these differences would matter most once I get to the bubble. At Party I find myself basically folding or pushing, and if I push with 10BB or less, I can expect to get called.

At Stars, I often have enough chips to raise 2.5BB and play a flop, if necessary. And if I am the short stack at the bubble, I can expect the others to fold when I push.

And if you don't think the structure matters, any ideas why I would be playing worse at Party?

I only play at party but i think in party you have to tight up your game , you have less chips so you cannot make as much moves as in stars. How do you rate the players level in stars playing 20$ sng's? i would like to try.

One more difference (don't know if it would affect your results much) is that there's no ante at Party. You can't "value steal" as well with a big stack, because there's no ante overlay in the pot like there is at Stars at the higher blind levels.

Guess that's more of a MTT consideration, but it is another (probably obvious) difference. I don't steal as much with the big stack on Party as much as on Stars (absent some bubble situation, etc.).

It can be fun to "play fancy" postflop, etc., but on Party you're probably best off sticking to the very basics. A good football analogy is if you can run the ball up the middle for 5-6 yards a pop every time, why the hell would you ever do any fancy-smancy passing plays?

He's playing turbos on stars. 5 mins per level. Fast blind increases but this is somewhat negated (as per the comparison to party) by the deeper stacks which allows for some limping in and "move making" even on the turbos.

i personally prefer Stars and have much more success there. i don't even really like the turbos. i played them last week and had some decent success but not as much as in the regular SNGs. i feel any lost $ because of extra time spent is made up for in extra knowledge and skill gained.

would you not agree that you become a better player playing at stars because you play many more situations - PF, flop, turn, river, than at party where it's basically only PF, and sometimes flop

Not to highjack this thread or anything, but what do the blinds start at, at Stars?

Stars Structure

9 Players, 1500 Chips (13500 in play)

Round 1: 10-20
Round 2: 15-30
Round 3: 25-50
Round 4: 50-100
Round 5: 75-150
Round 6: 100-200
Round 7: 100-200, 25 ante
Round 8: 200-400, 25 ante
Round 9: 300-600, 50 ante
Round 10: 400-800, 75 ante
Round 11: 600-1200, 100 ante

And 1000-2000 is next, but I've never seen a SNG get that far.

me neither, and only got to 600/1200 once. i'd say they usually end at 200/400. sometimes 300/600

I just saw 2 guys duke it out at this level today.

I was watching a SnG (trying to get a feel for them before diving in full steam). They traded chips for about 8 hands.
