Button is a decent player, not overly aggressive unless he actually has something good.

Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (9 handed)

Flop: (8 SB) 7/images/graemlins/spade.gif, J/images/graemlins/spade.gif, Q/images/graemlins/club.gif (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, Button raises, SB calls, BB calls, Hero 3-bets, Button calls, SB calls, BB calls.

Turn: (10 BB) 8/images/graemlins/club.gif (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, Button calls, SB calls, BB calls.

River: (14 BB) 2/images/graemlins/club.gif (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, Button calls, SB folds, BB folds.

Final Pot: 16 BB

As soon as I got raised on the flop, I was pretty sure that the button must have had at least two pair or a set. I figured that since my hand had a lot of ways to improve, I figured it would be good to be aggressive. Was the flop 3 bet and turn bet too much? Should I have just checked/folded the river?

Played perfectly. Even if he capped the flop, I would lead the turn.

I can't envision a scenario where you don't take this hand to showdown.
