How the f*** does someone with less that 4 years of experience in legal gambling get a 15k bankroll?

I thought I was doin ok with a 2k...

This is a sincere question, what limits did you start playing? what do you play now? did you just read a few books and play well enough to climb up the ranks, learning more as you go?

Basically, what I'm asking is how do I get my bankroll up to 15k ?????

Btw, I play nl ring games, is there easier money to be had in limit games perhaps?

daryn

the money is in limit.

played poker for a long time before i decided to get serious about learning the game. about 3 years ago i decide to learn the game and read the books. bought theory of poker and holdem for advanced players. started playing 1/2, moved up to 2/4, then started playing shorthanded games. 5/10, 10/20, built up a serious bankroll, and used it to pay for college and random hedonistic pleasures.

graduated college in may, used my BR to pay off tuition (no student loans). then i started the building process again, started with 2/4, 3/6, 5/10 shorthanded. i'm actually still playing 5/10 6 max on party even though my bankroll is currently $25,000+. i'll move up again someday, but right now i'm in no rush. $125/hr 4 tabling is a good rate.

Jesus, I guess I never took the time to calculate that 3BB/hour works out to $120/hour 4 tabling at 5/10.

Thanks for the post, I've always wondered how people start. But don't you ever get bored of limit?

And about limit vs no limit, are you saying the competition at 5/10 limit is that much worse than say 2/4 no limit? It seems the money flows faster from good to bad players in no limit...

Or is it the fact that you can't really 4-table no limit games?

daryn
11-25-2004, 01:33 PM
yes, limit is boring, but only because online poker is boring in general. it's not that NL is more exciting than limit, or vice-versa.

with regards to limit being more profitable, i say that because there's just more money in it. more people play bigger stakes in limit than in no limit.

You can legally gamble online at 18 (not at UB).

see, i disagree. Everyday i look forward to at least three hours of multitable limit action. Ive only got about 90K hands, so maybe its all still new to me, but i really do enjoy it tremendously. Of course, i also really am apathetic about no limit, so YMMV

Right now I'm making a couple of dollars an hour playing .01-.02 HU NLHE. It's fun practice, balancing school and life and all.

When college comes, I'll look at it more as Daryn does, i.e. paying for college tuition and other stuff.

Simple.

1) Have money at your disposal when you begin. I didn't start with chump change.

2) Read every 2+2 book you can get your hands on.

3) Play and talk on 2+2 as much as you can.

4) (the most important part) Get lucky and make two five-figure scores in three weeks in big field nl tourneys.

Also play a total shitload. This is especially true of people who were capable of playing tons and tons of hours of video games.

It isn't uncommon for the younger people to be way more dedicated.

In a previous post I talked about my 20 year old brother that has been playing online for about a year and a half. He went broke 11 times from July '03 to July '4. Each time I sent him $100. Each time he immediately jumped into a 3/6 game. One time he ran it up to over 1K, then went broke.

In mid july he deposited $50 using our mom's credit card (the account is in her name). He has now run that $50 into $61000. He has $51K in his account and has taken out 10. Ive never seen anything like it. It would seem its beyond a fluke now. He plays 4 tables of 15/30, and usually gets in about 1500 hands a day.

Guess I'll be borrowing money from him one day...

It's funny how everyone has made at least 20k playing poker in under a year.

daryn
11-27-2004, 04:10 PM
why is it funny? i could probably make $80,000/yr or more playing poker. depends on whether i could put in the hours and whether or not i'd get burnt out.

Topflight
11-27-2004, 08:41 PM
I guess it isn't funny. I just have a hard time believing it. After starting to play 5/10 recently I no longer think it is funny.

I guess I'm just having a hard time picturing who all these horrible players are. I also have a hard time believing there are that many people out there that are capable of playing poker on a relatively high level.

It seems like everyone out there has a brother that is a professional poker player making 150k+ a year. Maybe they do though.

Topflight
11-27-2004, 08:43 PM
It doesn't surprise me that you could make 80k a year playing poker if you wanted to. I wouldn't be surprised at all if you claimed you could make more. In fact I was surprised when you said you only played 5/10.

I hear you, I am struggling like crazy to continue with my degree. I know its the right thing to put my efforts into, but the lure of making a decent wage NOW rather than a very good wage later is very appealing during my weaker moments.

This sounds reasonable to me. Personally, I play two 5/10 SH tables and average 2.5 BB/hr at each, so $50/hr. If I could somehow play 40 hrs/wk at that level and not get burnt out, that would be $100K/yr. I don't think I could do it, though. I'm content to play 10 hrs/wk or so and make some extra cash on the side.

-- Homer

EDIT - I also forgot about rakeback. I just signed up for one of these deals (a little late, I know) and I'm getting like $12/hr back on top of earnings at the table. So, if you include that, you only have to make 1 BB/hr/table to make $32/hr or $64K/yr. Damn, I'm about to talk myself into quitting my job. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Put me in the club.

Topflight,
It's very realistic for people this young to make $20k in their first year. I made quite a bit more than that in my first year and I'm pretty certain that there are people my age (20) on here that are making more than I am.

My bankroll is currently $0. I've been playing for a little less than a year and just haven't been putting enough effort into getting good, so I just end up going broke because I'm a total fish (at least the first step is accepting your problem). Luckily, I've been getting better, so I break even and withdraw before I go bust, but I haven't played in about a month but HAVE started reading these forums. Hopefully, I'll be able to get back in with whatever money I can scrape together (or borrow from my parents), slowly build a bankroll (these forums helped me realized that I was playing WAY below an acceptable threshold of my BR), and get to a point where poker is profitable.

As a side note, I've seen some posts in this thread about how everyone has a brother/knows this guy who's making $100K+/yr playing poker and he's 23. I understand why people think this, but I also understand that I do know a guy who claims to make $30K/month playing poker. I don't know what stakes he plays, but he plays in Atlantic City a lot, so I think that down there, you'd find a lot more people with deep pockets looking for a good time who'd be willing to throw money away on a game they know nothing about. As for the high stakes online games, I don't know how there can be that many people in the world who are willing to just throw money away while sitting at their computer clicking buttons. But if they're out there, I hope they have fun doing it, and I hope the people on these forums have fun taking it.

Topflight

If everyone on here makes so much money. What would an above avg hourly rate be. It seems like everyone is making $50/hr no problem.

Somehow I thought I was doing good, and I'm barely even average, since 100k/yr is pretty much the standard now.

Lazymeatball
12-01-2004, 09:43 AM
If you can 4 table and clear $5 per table per hour from bonus, and make 1 bb/table/hr at $1-2 that's $28/hr. Do that for 20 hrs a week for 50 weeks and there's $28k. These are very reasonable numbers, considering skill requirements and time commitments of an 18-25 year old.

I'm with Sponger. Before poker any video game I played, I played like mad resulting in family and friends making fun of me for it.

"Why can't you be as focused on games as you can on studying?" was always the question. Well it's not exactly studying, but at least playing poker makes money.

My BR hovers at is ~4K

I am under 18 and play 1/2 no limit consistently and am stepping up to 5/5, with great but unsustainable results so far. I don't maintain my bankroll to live off it forever (I'm not planning on going pro or anything) so I'll step up and play the 5/5 game since I enjoy it, can make big scores (1K+ easily on a good night). Don't even think about telling me I don't have enough BR to play 5/5, I know.
