wealthy.

is that an easy choice? Because I think that that is the most obvious choice at first, but when you think about it, it doesn't seem so obvious. As long as I made enough money to live comfortably, I would much rather take the later.

Not I, I feel like I already have the means to be significantly happy, but not the means to be significantly wealthy. Thus when I weigh the benefits vs the ease of obtaining the option I didn't choose, wealth becomes the clear choice.

Hard to explain I think.

The only logical answer to this question, for me at least, is to always be happy. Happiness is the ultimate goal in my life. Money is just a means that may or may not help me reach the goal of being happy.

you have to choose the second one, because if your happy and all then your not worring about money.

no, I hear what you are saying, but I wonder how much being absurdly wealthy would change your life, and how happy you would be being that wealthy.

We can make this somewhat vague question easier by putting it into a more animated context.

Would you rather be Mr. Burns or Ned Flanders?

Mr. Burns is wealthy yet miserable, and Flander's is poor, yet content and happy. I originally chose content and happy in the poll, but now that I've put it into this "Simpsons" context I'd much rather be Mr. Burns.

Excellent. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

My point is that I'm already happy. In fact, I think money would add to that happiness by allowing me to enjoy it instead of doing regular crap like working. I think being absurdly wealthy would change my life quite a bit, especially when driving in my 24k gold-dipped Maybach to the new casino I opened. I certainly don't think the wealth would make me happy on its own, but I seriously doubt my happiness quotient would go down from it.

If you are happy enough and take the money, you have a much greater opportunity to enrich the lives of others. It's not as obvious a choice as you might think.

you may enrich their lives, but at a point people start to look at you as an ATM, and then they use you, and become your "friend" for all the wrong reasons.

Note; I don't think any choice is better per se, I am just arguing my pick /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well certainly that is a possibility, but look at the other possibilities of doing good for others. Donating large amounts of money to charities and charitable causes, sponsoring public school projects, toy drives, youth centers in bad neighborhoods etc. The more I think about it, the more I could certainly sacrifice 100% happiness for enough money to do whatever I wanted.

Edited: Also just arguing my side /images/graemlins/grin.gif

But then if your always happy and content yourself, would you really care if other people are happy?

Anyways, that's an angle I didn't really consider, but I'd still go with being happy.

Happy. That's the whole point.

gamblore99

happy. it doesnt really seem like an arguement. I must not understand this dilemma really.

originally it seemed this post made no sense, but after reading posts and taking note of Busters, the only arguements that can be made are 1) youll be even more happy than just regular happy, and 2) you can help others with your wealth.

these at first dont stick out, but they are the only possibly arguements for the wealth.

so 1) if your not your happiest without the money, than having it can't hurt, it will probably bring you closer to getting "Max Happy", and 2) you may be able to help other people with money boils down to what I think is a moral duty to be wealthy and help others.

I pick wealthy, but only if my assumptions stand. if it were interpreted as "be as happy as you can be, or be loaded" and your choice will not effect the state of others, then the obvious answer would be happy.

If you're wealthy enough, you can destroy all the happy people or even kill them outright.

Who's the happiest now? Muahahahahaaaa!

Thus you get the best of both worlds -- both absurdly wealthy and happier than anyone else, even without bothering to worry about taking your own happiness into account. And if you don't have any happiness of your own to take into account even though you're absurdly wealthy, you're an exceptionally hopeless and idiotic screwball.

If you were always happy, wouldn't life get boring?

Sometimes it feels good to be sad/mad/etc.
There needs to be some drama.

There is HUGE difference between "happy" and "content".

The first is great and what practically everyone strives for. The second is shitty, it's just a lack of strong emotion in any direction, it's almost the polar opposite of happiness in that it's if something you're content with improves, it's less likely to lead to happiness than if something you're upset with improves.

Happiness > Money > Contentness (although it depends as opposed to what).

the problem is you are assuming you will still be happy if you take the money.

The correct answer is #1 - if you can't be happy with a [censored] pot of money then you sure as hell have no chance of ever being happy without it.

Usually the expense of getting the money is your time, your stress level, and so on. You have no time to really enjoy your relationships or your life at all so having the money is meaningless.

If you're handed a lot of money, and are therefore free to do whatever you want all the time, you'll have a lot of opportunities to be happy. At that point it's your own damn fault if you screw it up.

You can't be happy if you're in constant fear of being homeless.

Are the choices mutually exclusive?

Dominic

I'm going to choose absurdly wealthy...but not for the reasons you might think.

I'd hate to be always happy and content with my life, because if that were so, I'd have no reason to strive for improvement, go after something bigger, achieve a goal.

Without goals in life, you might as well just sit on the front porch and watch the rest of your life go by.
