Alright, it was hard to narrow it down to 10, but here's my list:

1. Airplane!
2. Austin Powers
3. National Lampoon's Vacation
4. The Naked Gun
5. Spaceballs
6. Caddyshack
7. Animal House
8. So I Married an Axe Murderer
9. Ghostbusters
10. Clue

I'm sure a lot of people would put Monty Python up there, but that was never my style.

You have a strong preference for screwball comedies based on your list.

I'd put Big Lebowski, and Fish Called Wanda on my list.

And the original Pink Panther, absolutely brilliant.

Order is very tricky. Depends on mood. All are subject to whim and heavily influenced by most recent viewings.

1. Big Lebowski
2. Caddyshack
3. Office Space
4. Princess Bride
5. Austin Powers
6. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
7. Sleeper
8. Fletch
9. The Jerk
10. Mall Rats

What about Fight Club? I know most people don't categorize it as one but I think it actually is, just a very dark one. Anyway it's a bad ass movie and very funny at times.

Real favorite Princess Bride.

Kingpin should be up there also.

Office space was great for half the movie. The other half blew.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles: I wasn't a John Candy fan, but he was wonderful here.

Duck Soup: My favorite Marx Brothers movie. The mirror scene alone is worth it. And Chico and Harpo don't play the piano and harp, an extra bonus. "Hail, hail, Fredonia."

Modern Times: Chaplin's greatest movie. Tons of great scenes, including the best roller skating you've ever seen.

The In-Laws: Not the recent un-funny one with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks, but the original with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. "Serpentine, Shelly, serpentine."

The Frisco Kid: Gene Wilder as a rabbi out west (with Harrison Ford). "I don't want to hurt nobody."

The Producers: The original non-musical features an outrageous performance (his only kind) by Zero Mostel, another great Gene Wilder role, and Dick Shawn as Hitler. "Don't be stupid, be a smarty, come and join the Nazi Party."

The Freshman: Brando playing Brando playing the Godfather. "Carmine said one boy, here are two."

Some Like It Hot: Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in drag. And it's got Marilyn Monroe in a clingy dress. And Joe E. Brown. "Nobody's perfect."

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: not really a comedy, but Eli Wallach's performance is a comic classic. "If you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk."

The Odd Couple: Walter Matthau at his best. "Now it's gahbage."

I don't know if it would be on my top ten as well. I just listed some movies that popped into my head and made me smile that moment.

It would take me a while to find my actual top notch favorites. I just wanted to point out that early 80s comedies aren't even funny to me. I seriously don't laugh at all.

Caddyshack and The Jerk(1979), I really gave them a chance. I guess I'm just too young. I just stare at the screen in awe of how bad it is, then I become bored and have to turn it off.

You were doing fine until you got to Animal House.

Here's one made in the past twenty-five years: Tootsie, okay Manhattan, too.

After that, you can basically forget it. In fact, you can begin and end the list with Preston Sturges, Chaplin, the Marx Brothers (everybody likes a bit of anarchy), and Jacques Tati.

Boudu is a good choice, though.

Maybe. But I liked it. It was just strange enough for me.
It certainly wasn't terribly funny.

One of the funniest lines ever in movies, though, for me, was when he took Broderick's chicken skin, put it onto his face, and said, "You're looking lovely tonight, Clarisse."

A lot of movie comedy is aimed at teenagers or those almost teenagers on either side. I'm now 51. I remember the movies that were aimed at teenagers as being funny when I was younger. But a lot of the movies on many of the lists here I have either not seen or found profoundly unfunny (Meet the Parents, Something About Mary, Austin Powers).

Man...there are some really bad lists out here. It's ok to have a movie that was made more than six or seven years ago, guys.

1. Dr. Strangelove (Kubrick)

Obviously. It's my favorite movie of all time, so it has to make the top of this list.

2. A Shot in the Dark (Edwards)

The first and funniest Pink Panther movie. Easily my favorite pure slapstick comedy. Peter Sellers has to be the funniest man ever to grace the silver screen.

3. Blazing Saddles (Brooks)
4. The Producers (Brooks)

"I get no kick from cocaaaainnne...."
"When you've got it, flaunt it! Flaunt it!"
Brooks is hilarious. Young Frankenstein nearly made this list as well. No one was better at writing one-liners than Brooks, and no one was better at delivering them than Gene Wilder.

5. Best In Show (Guest)

Oddly enough, I still haven't gotten around to seeing This Is Spinal Tap, so the mockumentary slot has to go to this movie. Hilarious from start to finish, with the highlights being Eugene Levy and Fred Willard.

6. Sideways (Payne)

I might be cheating a little bit here, as this isn't a pure comedy, but it has some absolutely hilarious moments. Paul Giamatti's wallet hit and run is one the funniest sequences I've seen in a while.

7. Dodgeball (Thurber)
8. Zoolander (Stiller)

I'm surprised that very few of the crowd mentioned these two. There have been a number of good comedies done in recent years by the whole Ferrell/Stiller/Vaughn/Black crew, but I thought these were definitely the funniest. I remember myself laughing uncontrollably at these films, so here they are.

For the rest of it, I can't really differentiate, so just know that Happy Gilmore, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Austin Powers, Young Frankenstein, Anchorman were all given consideration. Amelie, Garden State, Being There, About Schmidt, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind might make the list, but they aren't pure comedies, and I didn't really feel like cheating except for Sideways.

Night on Earth... has its funny moments, and is a great movie. But top 10 funniest movies of all time? I don't know. I am a huge Jarmusch fan, but any movie that ends with a 5 minute monologue about a dead baby cannot really make my top 10 funniest flicks.

"Holy Grail" was a great movie but the huge nerd following it has really keeps me from enjoying it anymore. Same for "Life of Brian" only to a lesser extent. I realy like "Monty Python's 'The meaning of Life," particularly the rugby match, and the Protestant diatribe against papist opposition to birth control.

Another movie worth mentioning is "Bowfinger" which had a great performance by Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy. For some reason the movie isn't talked about much.

ps. Ben Stiller is awful at everything he does.

Buck Laughlin: Doctor, question that's always bothered me and a lot of people: Mayflower, combined with Philadelphia - a no-brainer, right? Cause this is where the Mayflower landed. Not so. It turns out Columbus actually set foot somewhere down in the West Indies. Little known fact.

I'm surprised Major League didn't get more mentions. Bob Uecker is hilarious as Harry Doyle. "well, they don't call him the best color man in baseball for nothing"

Personally, I enjoy dark comedies.... "Swimming with Sharks" "Very Bad Things" "The Big Lebowski"

"Fargo"..."Oh, f*ck it, I don't have to talk either, man! See how you like it. Just total f*ckin' silence. Two can play at that game, smart guy. We'll just see how you like it. Total silence."

Another terrible movie that I thought was hilarious the first time I saw it was "Whipped" with Amanda Peet.

My list in real no order:
Dazed and Confused
Ferris Bueller
Best in Show
This is Spinal Tap
Big Lebowski
Billy Madison
Office Space
Blazing Saddles
Space Balls

I'll get back with my 10th.

Planes, Trains and automobiles.

Okay I just remembered a movie funnier than the ones you have all mentioned. Full Metal Jacket.

Something which I think you are all missing here is that the funniest movies are dramas. Comedies are generally stupid with a lot of forced humor that isn't really funny.

"Defending Your Life"

GREAT call, Jett. I forgot all about it. Used to be one of my favorites. May be Albert Brooks' best ("Lost in America" is usually cited as that, but I think this is better).

I know I haven't seen 'The Blues Brothers' listed, and I believe it should be. 'The Odd Couple' as well.

Sorry to re-hash this thread............... but another person that has seen this movie. OMG I can not believe it.

There are so many quotable lines from that movie it is astounding. I really wish more people would have seen it.

The scene with the frogs and carrot alone is enough to make you cry from laughter.
