View Full Version : Fl. limited hands tourneys

12-18-2001, 12:12 AM
I recently moved to Florida and found that they play tournaments (HE, O/8, 7stud) with a limited number of hands - 50 or so. The one with the most chips wins the payout (1st - 3X cost, 2nd 1.75X, 3rd 1.2, 4th .75) .

I've had some success, but would appreciate any input from others

Thanks

So would I....I played an Omaha tournament the other day and the first hand i was dealt A2..10 of us took the flop. My mouth dropped. It was like this the rest of the game (9 handed flops). Noone has any concept of hi./lo My question though is is this beatable with such a big rake.

10 players pay 135 and get paid off 1000. 1st-500

2nd-250 3rd 150 4th 100. Fossilman and others please let me know what u think

That is a stiff rake. With a limited number of hands to play, it is probably difficult to beat. But, if they are all just calling preflop in Omaha8 (i.e., not raising much), and then still call way too much postflop, it is probably beatable.

I used to beat a 3-6 Omaha8 game in Chicago that had a rake to $5, $1 jackpot drop, and mandatory $1 tip to the dealer. Like this game, it was rare for anybody (other than me) to fold preflop, and there was little preflop raising. I would sometimes flop the world in that game and still get 5 or 6 callers to the river.

I live in Florida and would never consider entering the type of tournament you have described, although I love poker and play quite frequently. The limited hands, the high fees and the crapshoot mentality of the other players, takes out the strategy of tournament play. The problem with legal poker in Florida is the antiquated laws, such as a $10 cap on all pots. If the lawmakers had any sense at all, they would eliminate that rule and allow these jai-lai frontons and dog tracks to open up full scale poker rooms, so they could save these two dying industries.(Not that I care if they are saved, but poker would certainly give them a big shot in the arm) If you want to play in a decent tournament, check out your closest Suncruz Casino, that sails offshore 3 miles. The one in Port Canaveral has Sunday night tournaments with a smaller buy-in, entry fee and has multiple re-buys and an add-on at the break and usually pay 6-7 places with the total prize pool usually above 4K. Good Luck!

Thanks to those who posted. I have since played in several more tourneys with strange results. The one that got me the most was when, with 2 hands to play, a drunk player with 1st locked (7k+ in chips) threw over $1k+ to a player who was in 3rd - giving him $2950 in chips to my $3100. 2950 was sb $50 and I was bb $100. I was then forced to play garbage to try to hold on to 2nd and got crushed, costing me $ /images/frown.gif

Then there was the time I did not win one hand and the time I got burned, losing to 2 higher full houses back to back.

Sometimes the poker gods have a strange sense of what goes on.

Sounds like Men "the Master" was playing with one of his horses and you got burned. (See Fradet post)

Drew,

I just finished reading the Men.. article. I have played tourneys and ring games in LA & SF and have seen all sorts of strange things.. We do need to clean up the poker to help it gain popularity and players.

Thanks for the laugh
