Here’s an unusual situation that occurred at the final table of an online tourney recently:

3 players remain
I’m chip leader with $110,000
Player A has $50,000
Player B has $30,000

Winner gets a $15,000 WPT buy in at an upcoming tourney at the Bellagio.
Second place wins $4500
Third place wins $3500

Player B had earlier made it known that he doesn’t want the First place prize if he wins, but would take the second place prize by folding away his blinds should he get heads up at the end.

Here’s the situation:

Player A on the button opens ALL IN.
Player B in the small blind FOLDS.
Action on me, holding AJ suited.

I think in a normal situation, I call Player A. However, knowing that Player B (and I’m assuming it wasn’t a ploy), is willing to lay down all his chips and settle for second place if he makes it to the final two, I folded the AJ suited in order to not risk a big loss here since, for me, not finishing 3rd means taking 1st. I liked having two of us in the game (Player B and me) essentially trying to knock out Player A, hoping Player B would be the one to go to battle first, as long as I had a significant chip lead. Any comments or thoughts on the lay down and the strategy in general?

This is an easy laydown if the blinds are $10/$20, as you describe.

No, the blinds were $800-$1600 with antes of $150

Still an easy laydown under the circumstances. And I would believe that he only wants 2nd - many people do the same thing.

When the guy open-pushes for 31 times BB, AJ suited in the big blind should be a fold in a normal situation. (Unless he is making that play most of the time he is on the button.)
