The Piano

My daughter had never seen The Piano and I urged her to rent it. She asked me what it was about. Here's what I told her:

I takes place maybe about 100 years ago. A woman from England, who is not deaf, but cannot speak, it sent to New Zealand in an arranged marriage. She plays these strange, haunting pieces on her grand piano. She has a daughter. The piano is too heavy to be transported from where the boat docks to the town where they live. So they leave the piano on the beach.

The woman is unhappy without her piano. Her relationship with her husband is cordial, but not sensual. Their next-door neighbor, who has gone "native" a bit, goes to get the piano, which he buys from the woman's husband. He now asks the woman for piano lessons. She give him the lessons and he tells her she can buy the piano back from him, one key at a time. Each lesson he gets a little more forward with her, first just sitting next to her, then touching her, and things take off from there. They end up having an affair and the husband finds out. Things get wild from there.

Man, who thought up such a story?

Anyway, I agree, it's a great movie and I'm not the least bit embarrassed to say I've seen it and loved it. The best part about it is not having to listen to Holly Hunter speak.

Titanic. Everybody makes fun of this movie so it's a little embarrassing to say that you not only saw it but liked it. But I liked it, so [censored] off. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I never made fun of the movie, but I made fun of Celine Dion singing the track...LOL

And I knew how it was going to end (not the boat sinking, but with him giving up his life to save her) - /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Otherwise, I think they should have given that boat the best actor award that yr...incredible.

I've seen a lot of bad movies, and I mean..... A LOT of bad movies. Many more than once. I have seen just about every MST3K, but I'm not sure if those movies count.

The first movie that comes to my mind is:

Kangaroo Jack

Twice. /images/graemlins/spade.gif

My shame isn't the movie as much the frequency. I've seen Adventures in Babbysitting 3 times... in the theater.

horrible horrible horrible movie.

c'mon how many times can you laugh at jokes about siamese twins.... yeah real siamese twins would get in a fight and one would try to run away from the other one and that is suppose to be funny?

someone calls them on the phone, and its for the other one and he says "tell him i'm not here"..... oh yeah thats a laugh riot!

the movie's not designed to be a laugh riot, it's a sentimental movie with some laughs thrown in. still files under comedy. i didn't see it advertised as the next something about mary or dumb and dumber.

I watched this movie called Mambo Italiano with this chick the other night (i'm trying to get in her pants.) It was about an italian family and how they deal with him being gay (they're a very traditional family.) A situational comedy. And I laughed. /images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I'm still trying to figure out the question. Does it mean the movie I enjoyed which many people thought sucked and I'm embarassed that I enjoyed it because it really did suck? Or does it mean that by using some sort of objective criteria, I now will reveal which movie I'm most embarassed to say I've seen? Well, I just can't answer this; I'm too confused.

Jane Campion wrote the story, I believe.

Man, I'm laughing just reading about those scenes.

It started off slow, almost got turned off, and then it really picked up a lot of steam. The last 3/4ths of the movie was outstanding.

THe Piano is one of the best films of the last 25 years. Beautifully conceived, shot and directed, it's a completely original story.

One of my criteria for greatness is to ask, "could anyone else have made this film?(book, music, etc.)"

In the case of The Piano, I'd have to say, no.
