Browsing the Barney's Christmas catalog today. Page 70, opposite a $500 cotton and cashmere blend sweater from Malo, is a "deluxe aluminum poker set" for $200.

Move your leather asses over, chumps, the chic and anorexic are on their way.

Any decent cashmere sweater should cost more than $500. Cotton blends are a joke.

The shark was jumped when I joined this forum.

I saw an ad for a 300 piece chip set with aluminum case for $80 in a Sharper Image catalogue. Looked like the same set you can find on ebay.

I see a Texas Holdem set in almost every store I go into.

Other possible Jump The Shark moments:

World Poker Tour: American Chopper vs Trading Spaces

All of the home shopping channels now have shows where they sell poker paraphernalia.

Haha, I was at the taping of that show!

Yeah, I think it's safe to say Poker has Jumped the Shark. When you're local Sports Authority has moved the Air Hockey Tables over to Display "Texas Hold-em Tables" and "Phil Hellmuths Delux Texas Hold'em Pro Set" (250 dollars) You know it's become one of the new super fads.

Actually...the fact that poker lingo has invaded our culture is proof of shark jumpage. Along the same lines, that people know what I'm talking about when I'm talking about poker in common conversation(using poker lingo around non-poker players).

Poker langauge had been in our culture since before I was born (Note: I am over 5 years old). How could something jump the shark before it boomed?

You can say poker language has "been in our culture", but it has never been so as much as it is now, by a large margin.

Has any other presidential candidate been said to be "drawing to an inside straight" before this year?

As I recall, Harry Truman had a famous little plaque on his desk that said, "The buck stops here."

I think that's a poker or blackjack reference, to the button.

People may be speaking about poker more regularly now, but poker and gambling lingo that's even remotely regularly used is old history by now.

Okay....I'm an idiot. I don't know what 'jump the shark' means.

Also - I think it's kind of funny that I take poker seriously and it is my sole source of income yet I don't own any chips....and until recently I didn't even own a deck of cards (I bought a deck for $2 at a convenience store because I was showing a friend how to play).

A quick googling came up with this at urbandictionary.com

1. jump the shark

a term to describe a moment when somethin that was once great has reached a point where it will now decline in quality and popularity.

Origin of this phrase comes from a Happy Days episode where the Fonz jumped a shark on waterskis. Thus was labeled the lowest point of the show.

Cousin Oliver on Brady Bunch, Scrappy Doo.

Also some good info can be found here (http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-jum4.htm).

Of course, the problem with this is that Happy Days was never a great show.

That's true, but everyone over 25 remembers those specific two episodes.

There's actually a jump the shark website, and a book put out by the guys who invented the phrase. The book is pretty funny; there are all kinds of lists of shows, books, sports and political moments, etc., with usually a brief analysis of exactly why a given episode or embarassing line truly was the jumping of the shark. It's pretty fun to figure out and argue about when somebody jumped the shark, especially with people who don't think the shark was ever jumped or even liked the show or musician or whatever long after the jumping. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Howard Lederer/Annie Duke's father is a linguist and I saw an interesting article he wrote somewhere on the net where he discussed how deeply intertwined gambling talk is with everyday talk.

Any one have the link?

I'm not positive, but I don't think "blue chip" comes from gambling.

Back in the day, Blue Chips was usually the highest denomination or best chip in a casino so the best stocks were called "blue chip" stocks.

I thought that was a joke until I saw your reply. Now I just can't get that HL Menken quote about no one ever going broke by underestimating the public's taste out of my head.
