Anyone going to Third Annual Jack Binion World Poker Open on January 5 through January 26, at Horseshoe Casino & Hotel and Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica, Mississippi?

What do you think of this series?

Any comments about strength of field? side action? satelites?

Jack is well liked by all the "name" players, and final buyin is 10,000---so I am sure they will be there---tough field, but side games have been good before.

thing I wonder about is that there is the tournamnet in Reno which was very successfull last year, and nuch closer to home for west coast players--so not sure about number of players who will be in Tunica????

Dirk,

I'm going this January for a few days during the first week. Last January I went to Reno, but I perfer this one.

There will be lots of side game action for all limits. The bigger games will be in the tournament room on the 2nd floor of the Gold Strike, and they also have a low-limit room on the 1st floor. Next door is the Horseshoe which has plenty of $10-$20 games. I expect the competition to not be as tough as Reno, because there will be a lot of players from the midwest, who will attend that are not professional players. Note that, the Reno tournament gets all the professional California players.

The tournament action will be about the same as Reno or Vegas. You will see the same players, so you will have plenty of tough competition, but you will experience a good influx of weak players.

Two years ago I played the $500 No-Limit Buy-in and had Erik Seidel on my left and John Bonetti on my right. Even with two well known players at my table, I performed pretty well for the first two hours because there were plenty of inexperienced players taking there shot. Furthermore, I didn't have to worry about Bonnetti because Erik S. took his chips away before the first break.

Once you get a tournament number and have registered for a tournament, you will be able to get comps for the buffet. When I was there two years ago, I thought that they were generous on comps compared to any of the events I attended in Vegas or Reno.

Good Luck and I hope to see the 2+2 gang there, but not at my poker table please!

I went last year, it's a great tournament. But they've made a very stupid decision in moving it to January at the same time as the World Poker Challenge in Reno. The Reno tournament is also very good, with a lot more dead money and weaker side games. I'm going to Reno instead, along with probably 100 of the California players that went to both last year. I'd be worried that the fields will be small and the competition very tough, since hard-core poker players like Jack Binion's events because he treats you so well (ie, free food for all three meals). The fields will be bigger and weaker in Reno.

I'll be in Tunica. It's closer, and the action should be just as good. The South in winter seems like a better choice than Reno in the winter. I'd imagine that most of the Nevada, Arizona, and California players will be more likely to go to Reno, so the strength factor is probably a push. Besides, I had a good run in the first Mid-America event this year, so I'll prefer to return to the scene of the crime ;-)
