View Full Version : What would you do?:WPF NLH

10-30-2001, 09:57 AM
Hi everyone. Last friday, knees bleeding from installing a parquet floor in my sisters apartment I made up my mind to go to the WPF and play in the $340 Monday Stud Tourney.

I got to Foxwoods on saturday afternoon at 4p.m. I immediately headed for the Satelite area to check for stud satelites. Just like magic I walked in and there was a $43 satelitel beginning. It would pay the $340 buy-in to the first tournament. Yes the stud tournament was the second tournament. This satelite was for the Sunday No Limit Holdem tournament. I decided to play anyway. Need the NL practice. Long story short. I finished 2nd, Made a buy in save. So it was a free roll. I felt good about my play so played another. Short of it: 3rd (tie). Felt good about play: Try one more says I. 3rd again. Tired: Disappointed: went to sleep and decided to play live stud on Sunday.

The mind has a way of making you do the unintended. It does. It did. when I woke up sunday. Refreshed: Knees a bit better: mind says hey why not try the $340 NLH tourney. "No, I don't play NLH very good, thank you very much:" I said to my mind. So always in control of my mind I walked into the Casino and signed up for the NLH tournament anyway. Finished 15th. In the money. Paid $1037. 339 entrants. Negreanu won. Negreanu knocked me out. Here's what happened.

19 players left: bubble for $1037 payout. I'm on the button with T6000. Blinds 800-1600 with 300 ante. One stack at table less than $2000. I'm next short stack. All fold to me including shortest stack. Hand 9,8o. I raise to $4000! Blinds fold. T8,500

The short stack gets knocked out on the next hand. T8,200. We go to 2 tables, 18 players. Draw for the button. I get the big blind. BB, 6,2o. T6,300. SB5,2o T5,400. Button. Negreanu raises t0 4k. Kathy Leibert (L) moves all in with 11k. All fold to Negranu (N). He thinks and thinks. Counts and counts. Says I came to play and calls. N:K,Qo. L:Ad,Jd. Q comes on board and Leibert walks. T5100. Next hand Negranu raises 4k. Next player moves in with 12k. N: calls. N:A,9o. Other player A,K. 9 comes on turn and N wins again.. T5,100. No card higher than an 8 for the next 6 hands. N raising every hand except one. Tony Ma moved in from early position with 11k and N and everyone else folded. T3300 BB:1600 ante 300 T1400 remaining. Before the hand I made up my mind that if N raised and it got to me uncontested T would call no matter what. N raises. All fold to me. I look. 6,5o. What would you do? I showed him my hand and called. Six came on the flop. Daniel had pocket nines. I was out. Not happy. Disappointed: but somewhat pleased that I had gotten that far.

A couple of high lites that I remeber. I had dinner with Kathy Leibert. My pleasure believe me. Take my word for it or not she is a very good tournament player and it was a treet talking poker with her. I played very good poker during this tournament. I got lucky one time. Extremely lucky. I called a $400 raise with T2000 because 3 others had called. I had KcTc. Flop came K,K,x. I moved in and was called by A,Ko. A ten came on the river and I survived. I made a ove on Tony Ma late in the tournay after we were in the money. He was in the cut off on my BB. I could feel a raise comeing from him. All foded to Tony. Blinds were 600-1200. He raised to $3000. I looked at Kh,8h. I reraised $5000. He showed me th ah and folded. I showed him the Kh and threw my hand in and took the pot. By the way he was a real gentleman. A pleasure to play against.

all in all it was a very fun tournament for me. If your interested I'll tell you about the stud tournament the next time.

good post and glad you made some money. next time though you must realize you cant fold that many hands with such high blinds and ante when left with only 5 or 6 thousand in chips.

I know what you mean about folding so many hands. I have played in three no limit tourneys in my life. Got 26'th at the Orleans Open no-limit, 9'th in a Thursday night Mirage, 6'th in a Friday night Orleans tourney. That is the extent of my no-limit play. My problem seems to be.....I can wait it out and get some good hands, I can make moves on the pot at opportune times and take it without a fight.....but I get towards the end of a tournament and I just can't get any cards or seem to get an opportunity to try and steal. In the first two of those tourneys I just got blinded out. The Orleans I decided I would make a move while I still had enough chips to scare somebody. I moved all in on the button for about $8000 (blinds 1K/2K antes,I think, were 300) with KJo and got called by BB with Ac8c. He caught an ace and put me out. I had played 3 rounds of the final table without playing a single hand. Did I wait too long? Should I have moved in with an inferior hand sooner? I guess experience will teach me. I feel like I play almost fearless until I get in the money and then I tighten up way too much. Definitely love the no-limit tourneys, but still a fish I guess.

"Definitely love the no-limit tourneys, but still a fish I guess."

My friend, after reading your post I doubt that there are many FISHermen that would want to hook on to the the likes of you. 3 tournmanents are quite frankly, nothing. Keep playing small ones until you find your game. With an inquisitive mind like yours I don't believe it will take you long to be a tourney money earner.

Vince-

IMHO, I would not pre-decide what to do in any given NL situation. I always read my opponent then look at my cards (or not!) and then decide.

BTW, thanks for the live stud lesson on Monday morning. I hate stud. I played horrible. I took down $135 in 45 minutes and then decided against entering the stud tournament. I did make much hay at the $20/$40 holdem game though.

Gotta go with Ray on this one and say that there must have been some opportunity to make a move before your stack got so low and you put up half of it in the blind.

Good job.

See you at the final table of the 5K event?
