View Full Version : Present and former card collectors: What's your best pull?

The hijacked portion of the betting thread made me think back: What's the best card you ever pulled out of an unopened pack? I'm not talking about a card that eventually turned into something, I mean you hit the jackpot on something that was already expensive.

Having not had a lot of money to spend while I was participating in the hobby, my best was a $14 81 Topps FB pack which resulted in a Joe Montana RC (off-center, though, oh well...)

I pulled a Mark McGwire card with a piece of his bat on it from an Upper Deck Black diamond pack. Sold it for $400, and I think it's gone up.

I just wanted to say that the same friend I was talking about has a mint Jordan rookie card, worth like 100k or something, I forget exactly how much, but its the big one.

The 86/7 Fleer Jordan isn't worth 100K even if it's graded a PSA 10 or BGS 10.

By "like 100k" did you mean 1k (Fleer) or 3k (Star) ?

The 86/7 Fleer only books for $800 right now. I've seen PSA 10's sell for over $50,000 in his hey day.

It wasn't mine but I saw someone buy a pack of 52 Topps and pull the Mantle. And he put the remains fo the 40 year old gum in his mouth.

The RC? That's a nice pull.

This is a tough question.

I'd like to think that my best "pull" was trading two Eric Davis Topps rookies in 1986 when I was 10 to one of my neighbors for a 1970 Nolan. I still have the card, it's not super-duper valuable, but is my most prized possession in my collection.

Well, until I spring for a nice 1968 rookie of course.

I do get tempted to crack open some 85 and 86 packs I have to see if I can pull a Lemeiux or Roy rookie.

As a hijack of this thread, I want to say that modern day jersey and bat cards should not count. I can't fathom why people pay big money for them, and I think the market on that stuff is going to fall out eventually. I mean, half of those cards they just have the player wear the jersey and then take it off again, and they chop it up and put it into 1000 cards.

Today's hobby is all about the lottery effect of pulling some insert card. No one even cares about the base set anymore.

Back to the original topic, I remembered that although I don't open the packs I have, I did crack open one single pack of 82 topps a year ago or so and pulled the Ripken RC. That was kind of cool.

I saw a PSA10 Jordan Fleer rookie go for ~28k on Ebay in 1999.

I delt in the hobby for a number of years at its peak the 86 Fleer Jordan PSA 10s would go for 30-35K(I want to say thaey may have booked as high as 60), I personally saw a PSA10 sold at the 1999 National in Atlanta, for 20k cash.

My most profitable pull ever, 01 UD Tiger Woods Auto. Gold numbered to 25 or 50. I pulled it at a show we had setup at
sold it for $2500 about 30 minutes later.

My brother who was my partner in the business and still runs it, pulled a 01 EX Ichiro Essential Credentials RC numbered less than 30, at the height of the Ichiro craze he sold it to a Japanese collector for $5000.

The game-used stuff is so prevelant that unless something is numbered very very low its basically a $25 card on ebay even if it is some big name or HOF. I have Mantle and Ruth jersey and bat cards, that I couldn't even get $100 bucks for on ebay. The internet and specifically the auction community really ruined the sports card market for the dealers, but it made it significantly better for the true collector.
