So are there attractive girls out there who think that a guy's skill at poker is cool and not just because it helps him win money? I want to hear some actual field evidence, not speculation. I generally do not talk about poker with girls and am wondering if I should continue this policy.

Women are attracted to powerful men. In the post Cro-Magnon era, $$ largely equates to power. Not completely; as you'll see men who exude great confidence + charisma, but don't have a lot of $$ or good looks; yet still get lots of premium tail. But, the underlying attraction is still to the powerful, confident alpha-male behavior.

So, if your poker-playing ability can be parlayed into either raw $$ or confidence/person-reading ability (plus some reasonable social skills), sure a poker player gets grade-A chicks.

Personally my opinion is that poker nerds will always battle their lack of charm and need to consciously keep in check the dork-factor/socially-hamfisted nature. That plus the fact that any dedicated poker player has probably grown man-tits and a cottage cheese-adled butt from endless hours of sitting...

I spent a couple weeks or so hooking up with my former best friend's roommate (which created some very typical girl'esque drama). One of the things she really liked about me was the fact that I played poker professionally instead of going to school.

I get that, but I think the OP is wondering if the level you play at makes a difference. I'd bet the amount of money you're making makes it slightly more palatable.

I think Slick wants to know if dropping the info that you're crushing the Party $2/$4 is a +PV move or not.

Just tell her your aggression factor is over 2, she should be impressed by that. Or you can always say "if you think my VP$IP is good, my BB/100 makes my WSD% look like my PFR%!" That should do it.

It is simple, chicks like a guy with confidence. It doesn't matter that you play poker or swing a bat, if you have the balls to walk up and talk to them, they will respond.

Poker players have an advatnage now a days because with all of the hype going on, we can explain to them how to play and give them great stories of bad beats or suck outs that they will think are cool.

Plus, since it is a topic that you hopefully know something about, it will be a lot easier to talk to the girls and be yourself.

It's worked for me.

Women also like guys who are doing things that are a little bit different. Playing poker seriously is still a little bit different, at least if you're a winning player or even a pro.

I've found women very intrigued by my poker playing before, but it's more exciting at a distance. There's little more dull than watching someone else play poker without playing yourself. And poker stories can be great at first, but they grow old really, really fast.

Then again, few people talk about their jobs much together, as far as the actual work they do, because most jobs are far more dull still than poker is, and nobody wants to take that back home and wallow around in it.

I still would always advise the classic entertainer's motto when talking poker with women, or with men: Always leave them wanting more.

Tell two or three too few stories instead of one too many.

Hey try telling your girlfriends dad who is a pastor that you play poker for a living.

She was around pre-poker playing, so there has been quite some fights about how I spend too much time playing poker instead of hanging out with her, or that I tell her I'll be over at a certain time yet constantly show up 1/2 hour late or we have to postpone dinner for a bit because my SNG won't end, or that i'll be in a shitty mood 1-2 a week cause i just tanked all day playing poker, etc.

Do I sound horribly whipped?
In my own defense of the inevitable "yes" I have thought if we ever broke up it would be nice because I could play more poker. Ah crap that makes me more whipped, [censored] [censored] [censored].

No chicks don't dig poker players. Chicks for the most part are clueless about such things, and think its just gambling. chicks want a guy who is stable and can bring home the bacon. A gambler doesnt fit this image.

Chicks however do appreciate money ([censored] whores! heh) and a guy with alot of free time to spend giving her affection, so if you can overcome the intial "oh, you gamble for a living?" and show her you've got money and time, then you are in.

Seeing that I'm not in school and I don't have a job, I did the whole match.com thing for awhile because it was really the only way to meet chicks who are outside my circle of friends. A whole bunch of times, I would have a girl make contact with me, we'd swap a few emails, maybe a phone call. And then when they found out what I did for a living, I just sorta never heard from them again.

Hey try telling your girlfriends dad who is a pastor that you play poker for a living.

So a couple months ago, I went to see this girl who I hadn't seen in like two years. I was supposed to meet her at her folks place and then go out for the night. We'd been flirting on the phone a lot lately and had gotten caught up so she knew I was playing poker professionally now, and seemed to think it was really cool. But apparently she had mentioned it to her folks more than once as something she found attractive about me, and when I got there I was almost immediately assaulted with a barrage of accusatory remarks about my gambling from her parents.

I don't mind discussing poker with people who are ignorant of it and making a case for its legitimacy, so I didn't mind at first and we went back and forth in kind of a debate/discussion type of way. But after about 20 minutes of this they started to get a bit louder and more personal in their attacks, and pretty soon they were borderline yelling at me. Stuff about how much their daughter looks up to me and thinks the world of me and how I'm a bad influence on her now that I'm playing poker and they even went so far as to say they don't want me anywhere around their daughter alone. They tried to make the argment that it wasn't something they had personally against me, but that they were "afraid for her safety" and gave the argument that since I play at casinos and win money, that someone could have followed me here to their house (two days after I last played live) and are planning an attack on me and anybody I'm with. (Yeah, right, okay, good argument.) All this time, the girl I came to see is crying and telling her parents to shut up. After it was obvious that they were just personally attacking me and didn't care to do anything else, I got up, grabbed Mandy's hand, said goodnight to her folks, and we walked out the door with them still semi-yelling at me as they followed us out to my truck and threatening crap (I'm assuming from their tone and stuff; I wasn't really listening anymore) as I drove away. I had planned at staying the night at their house that night, but we ended up winding down at a resaturant and getting a hotel.

Anyway, her parents' obvious disapproval of what I do hasn't made too much of a difference to her since that night since she knows she's obviously old enough to make her own choices and stuff, but I think that it has to a very slight degree.

On a side note, she was way hotter than I expected when I saw her. She was always the cutest girl I knew, but I guess cute turns to freaking hot in two years sometimes. Absolutely gorgeous. I should call her.

I've had a similiar situation to that. My ex girlfriends parents absolutely hate me. And its entirely because I play poker. I am a blight on society (exact quote). We aren't even dating anymore, just good friends, and she lies about where she is going whenever she hangs out with me because her parents flip out and threaten to kick her out of the house. It's really pretty sad.

Jeez you guys know some psycho parents.

Some parents are just very on edge about their daughters period. Any little thing could send them into a panic, and the first way they look at a guy dating their daughter is as a dangerous adversary.

But some people take pride in their panic, too, and love being mad or self-righteous; it can be addictive to certain personality types. Probably best to talk about it as little as possible with those types...but it's hard to know who those types are until too late. You can't tell a nut case just by looking at him.

I think part of the problem (at least in her dads view) is because I am succesful. I think hes going through that whole midlife crisis thing. He spends an hour a day in rush hour traffic, to work a 9 to 5 job he hates, hes done it for the last 15 years, and has 15 more to look forward to. The hot ass wife he married 20 years ago is now a fat moody hypocondriach. The last thing I think he wants to hear about is his daughters boyfriend who comes and goes when he pleases, doesnt have to put up with any of the 9 to 5 bullshit, and makes just as much money as him. Course thinking he is jealous of me just makes me sound like a pompous ass, so maybe he just hates me because I was sticking it in his daughter.

The mom just hates me because gambling is a sin. Being succesful at it, just gives her another reason to hate me. Not only am I partaking in sin, but I am making my money by preying on people who have an addiction.
