Here's a poll for you. Without plugging them into twodimes, which hand do you predict is the Expected Value favorite ie which would win more of the pot on average?

EDIT - when played against each other ie 3 players with these hands in plo hi/lo 8

Hand 1: 7 /images/graemlins/spade.gif A /images/graemlins/heart.gif 6 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif 6 /images/graemlins/spade.gif weak low, low pair, partial mid straight

Hand 2: 5 /images/graemlins/club.gif J /images/graemlins/club.gif 4 /images/graemlins/heart.gif 3 /images/graemlins/club.gif plenty of straights, possible low, weak flush

Hand 3: 5 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif 2 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif J /images/graemlins/diamond.gif A /images/graemlins/diamond.gif A25 low, AJ high, flush possible with reduced chance

wow! very interestin results! this confirms a suspicion I've had for quite awhile. Playing the high side only of O8b is not as horrible as everyone implies. The scooping potential is serious...

The hands came out of a game I played in (with a slight adjustment I will detail when the poll's been up for a couple more days).

As it turned out I lost the hand and went off to twodimes to see whether my betting was halfway reasonable....

Interestingly enough, the A766 hand wins the most when played against these two specific hands, but the AJ52 hand outperforms it heads-up. Probably because the 345 combo prevents the A25 from winning the low half of the pot when an A or 2 comes.

That said, I'll take the AJ52 hand, thank you.

d'oh you're not supposed to reveal the results

Cereal poster. Another interesting thing is, even if you change the 5 to a 3 or a 4 in Hand 3, it doesn't affect the result /images/graemlins/smile.gif

This PLO8 game is fantastic for unexpected results. It feels a lot more like the Wild West than the Hold'Em game, which is so well understood.

Mr Zee could/should do another book....

The poll (as at 19th November) has 75% of people choosing Hand 3. This is not the correct answer.....

twodimes tells us

pokenum -mc 500000 -o8 7s ah 6d 6s - 5c jc 4h 3c - 5d 2d jd ad
Omaha Hi/Low 8-or-better: 500000 sampled boards
cards scoop HIwin HIlos HItie LOwin LOlos LOtie EV
7s 6s 6d Ah 134263 250053 249777 170 15241 189850 1533 0.395
Jc 5c 3c 4h 63487 121333 369009 9658 68800 124732 1387 0.240
Ad Jd 5d 2d 101819 118956 371556 9488 160826 42904 2920 0.364

which is very surprising.

I played Hand 1 in this situation, although my top card was a Queen not an Ace. I had been amazed to see that the EV of the Q766 hand was basically the same value as the A25J hand, both at 37%. Make the Qh the Ah and it became the marginal favorite.

So there you go...... /images/graemlins/tongue.gif now you know.

to state the obvious...

how hands do hot and cold is very different from how they play out if you get to the flop with money in front of you. the reason everyone and their mom took A2xx is that you have a chance to make the nut low, whereas you'd have to have a nearly perfect flop to feel confident about putting money in with the other hands.

Very interesting results, cheange the 6 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif in the first hand to a 6 /images/graemlins/club.gif and hand 3 comes closer in EV, but change it to a 6 /images/graemlins/heart.gif and hand 1 is a runaway favourite.

Yor results are messed up because you ran these hands against eachother .

The A /images/graemlins/diamond.gif 2 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif J /images/graemlins/diamond.gif 5 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif is definately the best hand, but it is losing equity because an Ace, a Jack, and 6 other low cards are dead. Kill a 6, a 7 or both and AJ25 will be a favorite.

The AJ25 would be a significant favorite over the J345 heads up, and it would be a small favorite over the A766 heads up.

poker is not about who wins more often, but who wins the most money. Try making money with the first 2 hands ...
Even heads up and all-in i sill prefer AJ52 for better scoop potential.

That was the point of the questions - heads up, against each other.

The result is pretty surprising to me, but it ain't "messed up" - it's how the hands perform. Just as you find with the heads-up comparison with A766, it's not at all fantastic.

exactly. I thought it was interesting because you should (in theory) be able to make plenty of money from the A25J players when you are holding A766 as the A25J players will be pushing their hands too hard /images/graemlins/smile.gif
