So I went to lunch yesterday on business. We went to one of those slightly upscale restaurants so popular in downtown Palo Alto. I ordered the Salade Nicoise.

I said "I'd like the Salade Nisswaazz please."

The waitress gets this snotty look on her face and says "Oh, OK. You want the Salade Nisswaa." with a heavy emphasis on the "nisswaa".

And I'm sittin there like spare me the attitude bitch. I took French in highschool. I took French in college. The default rule is if there is a vowel following the last consonant, then you pronounce the consonant. Otherwise the consonant is silent.

What is the correct pronunciation?

I thought you were right but I wasn't 100% sure so I checked:

Your pronunciation was absolutely correct. Your default rule was pretty much correct. I bet the salad was not at all correct /images/graemlins/blush.gif /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

This is the perfect answer. But after you've finished your meal, of course.

The correct pronunciation is that which is held until after the point at which she can spit in your food.

Your pronunciation's correct. Hers would be if it was a "Salad Nicois". The same idea holds for a lot of French...for instance, you don't pronounce the "n" if the word ends "-ien" but you do if it ends "-ienne".
