View Full Version : Question about ROI

I think I must be doing this wrong. Through my last 50 $5.50 SNG's I come up with a ROI of 54%. I've only recently started keeping track of my finishes. Prior to that the money was coming in even better, so I figure my ROI has dropped some. I've read that 50%+ is unsustainable, so I can only figure that I'm calculating my ROI incorrectly.
Here are my finishes:
1 - 7
2 - 10
3 - 10
4 - 7
5-10 - 16

So net profit is $150 divided by $275 in buy-ins = 54% ROI. Am I doing this right?

If your last 50 games told you that you were -10% ROI would you believe it?

I don't think you need to say something like that, he was merely asking if he was calculating ROI correctly, sheesh.

I think you're missing the point, I didn't ask whether or not this was an indication of what I should expect. As I said I've only recorded stats for my last 50, prior to that I was doing at least as well probably even better. I have no idea what the actual number is prior to that, but over 2 months I turned $18 into almost $600 playing 100-125 games a month. So without being a math genius I would assume that through the last 200-250 my ROI was even higher. However ,my question was am I calculating my ROI correctly. So perhaps you could answer the question that was asked and not try to look like a dumb-ass by putting down a small sample size. If you can't than you probably shouldn't be answering at all.

I know what the point is. You could also search the forum as this question is asked very often. Yes, if the buy-in is $5.50 with 10 players your ROI is right. My point was that your ROI over 50 games doesn't tell you much. It could be as high as 90%+ and as low as negative numbers, but it doesn't mean that you will continue these results for long. Also, where do you play for the 10% vig on 10 player tourneys? Just asking because I've only seen 10 man tourneys with a 20% vig or 10% on 9 man tourneys.

Ultimatebet would be the obvious choice, but many smaller sites too.

Your calculations are correct.

I don't know what I did or said to offend you, but you don't have to respond to me(leave the question for someone who doesn't mind being bothered). Maybe you just have a beef against the world, cheer up man . Having such a negative attitude can't be much fun. I understood your point completely and agree 100%. I realize 50 is far too small a sample to draw any conclusions . Even had I kept records of the 200-250 prior to that(which I believe to have been at an even higher ROI), I don't think I could draw any real conclusions from that either. I simply wanted to know the correct method for calculating ROI, and yes I have read the threads about this before but wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly. Now to answer your question, I play primarily on Pacific Poker(a true crap hole but very profitable) which is one of the few sites that I've seen with a 10% vig on the smaller SNG's.

oh wow look at that, now do you believe me, him, and him again?

After playing tons of SNGS, I can easily tell you that ROI over 50 tournaments means zilch. I have had 110% ROI's over 50, and -40% ROI's over 50. If you lose say 5 or 6 key coinflips more than you should over a 50 game period, youd be surprised how much this can affect your ROI.

i got 2 questions:
1) what does vig mean
2) i just recently started to record my SnG's also and after about 150 i have an ROI of about 45% i was wondering if there is anyway to estimate how that will hold up over a longer period.

1) Vig is short for vigorish, aka 'Juice'. For SNGs it means the tourney entry fee, and is usually expressed as a percentage. It is also used often to refer to the interest charged my a loan shark.

2) Play more...~500-1000 depending on who you listen too.

Not sure why you list 4th seperately, does it pay on Pacific?

Your calculations are correct. Net Profits/Buy-In. In your case:

Buy-in= $5.50x50=$275
Winnings (7x25=175)+(10x15=150)+(10x10=100)=$425

(425-275=150)/275=0.54545454

I agree, 50 is a smallish sample, but keep up the good work.
