I've been enjoying these hip hop threads and busterstacks suggested a jay-z favorite line thread, but i figured allowing any classic lines would make for a more entertaining thread (although jay could handle a thread a lone). also we can let that other thread die.

maybe it would also be entertaining to leave out the author for guessing. and when you post answer a previous one and post yours. or maybe post half of it and have someone finish it.

finish this:

clip to tek, respect I demand it
slip and break the 11th commandment....

I have no idea what yours is, but here is mine:

Mommy loves you yeah I knew but I wasn't certain
'Cause the lenses through which she views life wasn't workin'
As a boy she told me wait till' your father to come home
I'm 24 still waitin' for my father to come home
And some parents only touch they children when a whips brought
That's why bad kids do bad [censored], just so they could caught
And get touched, this growing up [censored]'s rough
That's a big part of why were so mixed up
[censored] we don't have Bar Mitzvah's
We become men the first time our father hits us
And we don't open gifts up

Every time I hear this I just say, "damn /images/graemlins/frown.gif"

Whoa- TSC has better taste that I thought /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Same artist, it was in my location for a while.

"Not deaf like what, but def like whut"

There's thousands I can quote, but my brain is drawing a total blank right now.

not a hijack, just an asided, I stumbled on Brother Ali by accident. I saw he was coming to Bumbershoot in Seattle, and I was like" who da [censored] is that?" So I downloaded it and was like "WHOAH!", instantly hooked. Thats how you can tell what good music is.

How about:

Who the hell is this?
Paging me at 5:46
in the morning
crack of dawnin
now I am yawnin
wipe the cold out my eyes
see who this is and why

I might have messed this up, but its a dope line though.

I love OutKast, so I had to throw something from them out there. I have more respect for Big Boi than almost any other rapper out there, if only because his lyrics are some of the best. If you wrote his rhymes out on paper, 98% of the public would have no idea how to flow it together so perfectly. But, when I think OutKast, I think Synthesizer, and when I think Synthesizer, I think this verse from Dre.

Synthesizer, microwave me
Give me a drug so I can make seven babies
Pump my breasts up, can you suck the fat up
Please make my life appear
like ain't no such thing as bad luck
My, nose ain't right
Like I need a new one
Just take your pick, a yellow red
A black or a blue one
Virtual reality, virtual, BULLSHIT
Synthesizer preachers can reach you
up in the pulpit
Who a bitch?
Give me my gat so I can smoke this nigga
Tell his mamma not to cry
because they can clone him quicker
than it took his daddy to make him
Niggaz bitin verbatim
Thought provokin records radio never played dem
Instant, quick grits, new, improved
Hurry hurry, rush rush, world on the move
Marijuana illegal but ciggarettes cool
I might LOOK kinda funny but I ain't no fool

A close second though is JayZ:

Whoo! Who you lovin, who you wanna be huggin, heh
who you wit, who you wanna be [censored]
got this smarty art chick to whom I pose this question
I read a couple books to add to her soul's progression
to put this in laymen's term, I gave her some knowledge
she gave me, brains in return, she had to drop out of college
knowin she does this homework, I give her in house tutoring
in and out I'm movin through her student body union and
she, call me professor, say daddy come and test her
so she could fail on purpose and repeat the semester
I'm like, at this rate ma you never graduate
she said, I aint no fool I make it up in summer school

man i love andre3000. i love his verse on the second part of the aquemini song off that album.

my mind warps and bends

andre ben
welcome to the lion's den
original skin
many men
comprehend
i extend myself so you go out and tell a friend
sin all depends
on what you're believing in
faith is what you make
that's the hardest sh*t since mc ren
alien can blend
right on in
with your kin
look again
cause i swear i spots one every now and then
it's happening again, whish i could tell you when
andre this is andre, ya'll is just gon' have to make amends

I don't think it's particularly clever or anything, but I love the deliverly of this line from some Beastie Boys song...

Lookin' down the barrel of a gun
son of a gun
son of a bitch
gettin' paid
gettin rich.

A Jay-Z selection (that was probably mentioned in the other thread and obvious, anyway).

I heard, "Son, do you know why I'm stopping you for?" 'Cause I'm young and I'm black and my hat's real low? Do I look like a mind-reader, sir? I don't know. Am I under arrest or should I guess some more? "Well you was doin' 55 in a 54."

Another:

Once upon a time not long ago, when people wore pajamas and lived life slow, when laws were stern and justice stood, and people were behavin' like they ought ta good....

I like this Luda flow:

Stop, drop, KABOOM!, baby rub on ya nipples
Some call me Ludacris, some call me Mr. Wiggles
Far from little, make ya mammary glands jiggle
Got 'em under control, the bowl of tender biddles
Doc-tor giggles, I can't stop until it tickles
Just play a little "D" and I'll make ya mouth dribble
Bits and Kibbles, got 'em all after the pickle
I swing it like a bat, but these balls are not whiffle
Hit 'em in triples, wit no strikes, stripes, or whistles
I ain't felt this good, since my wood lived off a thistle
Sippin' some ripple, I got quarters, dimes, and nickels
For shizzle dizzle, I'm on a track with the Big Snoop Dizzle

My teflon
have you screamin' like Wyclef Jean
"Someone please call 9-11"
but if they ever get the watch on my left arm
I'ma have more burried than I got Stephen
First, they put the white sheet over you brother
Then the newpapers put you all over the cover
Then you in a suit, one hand crossed over the other
Last you in the earth with the dirt over you brother.
A tinted hearse is what most men leave in,
followed by a limo full of family and close friends grievin'
When full of marijuana
I'ma wanna kill you as bad as the Terminator wanted Sarah Conner
But, I'm losing my patience
[censored] it, send me to the island I could use a vacation
Now it's easy for me to understand...
How you could just kill a man.

I know you're supposed to be my steering wheel,

P.S. Considering I'm a fairly hardcore atheist, I find it somewhat funny that the first line is in there, but then again, that's pretty much how I see most people use their religion.

Walk the roads my forefathers walked,

What album is that song on?

B Dids
11-16-2004, 07:24 PM
I was going to post a verse, but I'll just post the whole song.

Artist: Atmosphere
Album: The Lucy Ford EPs
Song: Party For the Fight to Write

intro: This is one of those songs you can clap along too...

[Slug]
Hides the eyes beneath the bill of the cap
Walks amoungst the flies that hover over the mat
He lies, but only when there's a reason
Mentions life by the tragedy, the comedy, the season
Poor at handling and managing income
Got enough love to pass around and then some
Been done, that there a name you can trust
Read the whole match book and put a flame to the brush
Good with packs, and rips up sacks
Put the show in biz, try to give what you get
When you let him run free with the thought
Pull the line in, try to see what you caught
I ain't all that bad, but I ain't all that great
I Went back to the lab and began to mutate
Wait. I still look the same, still got the same dumb name
Ain't a damn thing changed
But if you like surprises, I know of a party
Where they all dance around to your heart beat
Bring your own agenda and embrace your flaws
Lets put a face on this common cause

chorus:
And he said some got pencils and some got guns
Some know how to stand and some of them run
We don't get along, but we sing the same song
Party for the fight to write, and write on

Stay gold Pony Boy, stay true outspoken
Make a record Mr. Gangster and get 'em all open
The theories, the stories, the truths, the myths
Its all therapy, on top of turntablists
This indutry's big, so big in fact (and fat?)
We can all get some, and we can give some back
And if its done correct, we'll make more than noise
So pick it up, and pick me up when you're bored with the toys
As a child Hip Hop made me read books,
And Hip Hop made me wanna be a crook
And Hip Hop gave me the way and something to say
And all I took in return is a second look
Son, you're shook, cuz ain't no such thing as half way there
Gettin' good at actin' like you just don't care
The circle of life trying to make it square condition
And self sit still
And Still.. where have all the sheep gone
Burnt down the farm and turned the TV on
John Coltrine, Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley all get invitations to my party

chorus

And if I spent anymore time inside my head
I'd probably need some leather straps attatched to my bed
And if I go another day without eating a meal
I'm gonna show you what it means to keep it real
And if they keep shootin' guns up and down my block
I Swear to God I'll be the first one to call the cops
And if I gotta hear that song ever again
You gonna have to share some of that beer my friend
They mistake me as happy-go-lucky
Just another base-head bobbin' nobody
But from where I stand, they sould like spies
Fillin' all the children's head with lies
Well alright, get your money right
But right now tonight I want you to pick a side
So when you got your power and you got your chedder
Let's get together soldier over throw this hold and make these roads better
Bring it on.. he said bring it on (right now)
Ain't nothin' but a party y'all... lets get it on

chorus

Also awesome:

Artist: Brother Ali
Album: Shadows on the Sun
Song: Forest Whitiker

Dependin on the day, and dependin on what I ate
I'm anywhere from 20 to 35 pounds over weight
I got red eyes and one of them's lazy
and they both squint when the sun shines so I get crazy
I'm albino man, I know I'm pink and pale
And I'm hairy as hell, everywhere but fingernails
I shave a cranium that ain't quite shaped right
Face tight, shiny, I stay up and write late nights
My wardrobe is jeans and faded shirts
A mixture of what I like, and what I wear to work
I'm not mean and got a neck full of razor bumps
I'm not the classic profile of what the ladies want
You might think I'm depressed as can be
But when I look in the mirror I see sexy ass me
And if that's somethin that you cant respect then that's peace
My life's better without you actually
To everyone out there, who's a little different
I say damn a magazine, these are gods fingerprints
You can call me ugly but cant take nothing from me
I am what I am doctor you ain't gotta love me

Out on bail fresh outta jail
California dreamin
Soon as I stepped on the scene
I'm hearin hoochies screamin
Fiendin for money and alcohol
the life of a west side playa where cowards die
Only in Cali where we riot now rallies are live and die
In L.A. we wearin Chucks not Ballies (that's right)
Dressed in Locs and khaki suits and ride is what we do
Flossin but have caution we collide with other crews
Famous cause we program worldwide
Let'em recognize from Longbeach to Rosecrans
Bumpin and grindin like a slow jam, it's west side
So you know the row won't bow down to no man
Say what you say
But give me that bomb beat from Dre
Let me serenade the streets of L.A.
From Oakland to Sacktown
The Bay Area and back down
Cali is where they put they mack down
Give me love!

Life is to some people unbearable
Committin' suicide and that's terrible
Was it much too much or nothing' big?
If ya live my life, you'd be fightin' to live
Life is to me my main asset
I be doin' all right and keep it just like that
Chill out at the house and pump that bass
I'm tryin' to get rich as I rock the place
Everybody's got that same old dream
To have big money and fancy things
Drive a brand new Benz, keep your banck right here
Never hear me stutter once because I talk real clear
It's on you, homeboy, watcha gonna do?
You can take my advice and start workin', fool
Or you can close your ears and run your mouth
And one day, homeboy, ya soon find out

Aiyo, knick knack patty wack, light up, twist a fatty jack
Four shotties, and playin' them lobbies where those cracks be at
Stay foul, break vows, niggas sniff gun pow-der
Check my caliber, make sure it register
Bring forth your head and stuff, don't wanna huff, puff
Or cuss, get stuffed in little bags, like angel dust
Check out the bangle cuts, double rocks, tangled up
And couples got bubbles, in the tub, lightin' the double Dutch
Hey, hey, hey, Ghostface and Donna Jay
Trife Dies', Killa Bamz, Wigs, Kryme got the yay'
All day, all up in your hood like court dates
Concealed heat, like a sheep dog or a NorthFace
Small space, more bass, polly like shore bait
Molly got four trays, and pinned dog with raw haze
Just like the old days, Willie Mays, with a low cut fade
Duster play the Giant, when I'm on stage

Speaking of best Lines and Brother Ali, download his battle freestyle against Eyedea. The line when he says "You talk about me tape, at least I got a tape" is one of the best lines I've heard in a freestyle battle. I doesn't sound good on it's own but you have to have to hear it in the context of the battle.

I have a really tough time appreciating rap lines without context. I figure the whole art of it is to be able to twist words/rhythms/rhymes in a way that is not only cohesive, but also illustrates whatever point they wanted to make better than the words alone would. Even if it's just meant to be clever/funny that's fine. But you need context and how it all went together. At least I do.

So, no, I can't take a one liner and say: "wow, that's great" when it's something like "where my bitches at?"

when her and Suzy yeah they threw a slumber - - party
but you can not call it that cause it was slummer
Well it was more like spend the night
Three in the morning yawnin dancin under street lights
We chillin like a villain and a nigga feelin right
in the middle of the ghetto on the curb, but in spite
all of the bullshit we on our back starin at the stars above
(aww man) Talkin bout what we gonna be when we grow up
I said what you wanna be, she said, "Alive" (hmm)
It made me think for a minute, then looked in her eyes
I coulda died, time went on, I got grown
Rhyme got strong, mind got blown, I came back home
to find lil Sasha was gone
Her mamma said she with a nigga that be treatin her wrong
I kept on singin my song and hopin at a show
that I would one day see her standin in the front row
But two weeks later she got found in the back of a school
With a needle in her arm, baby two months due, Sasha Thumper

i agree totally, but for the most part duke, but my intention was to create a thread for people who listen to hip hop pretty frequently and have followed it for a while. For those people who listen to hip hop in depth, specific witty couplets that really stick out from a creative verse, bring you back to that song and the feeling it gives/gave you. But you are correct in that if you haven't heard a specific song/verse it is a little difficult to follow along or appreciate a line, especially if someone doesn't listen to hip hop music very much in the first place. if people check out something they haven't due to a clever line or so found in this discussion, that's cool, but most "hip hop heads" will probably recognize a large percentage of the lines/songs mentioned here. I expect people who do not listen to hip hop at all to be totally lost on this thread and that's fine too.

This ones tough, but really one of the rawest verses i've ever heard EVER

My heart is cold as ice, so I know I`m shiest,
_________ was the kid that no one liked, my whole life was one big roll of the dice,
paying the price twice as expensive as white kids,
destined for Riker`s, not knowing my existence was priceless.
IT`S LIKE THIS
my soul was lifeless,
I earned stripes fighting the nicest in the crisis I slice `em in half and make `em dash like hyphens,
inviting any rapper to clash with the Titan.
My writing`s like fighting cause rappers be biting like Tyson
I`m hyping the crowd, keeping `em Loud like my label I`m proud
I`m able to lift from the bowels of the ghetto.
I found me a little sanity inside a career and a family, no more wars and rendering tears to insanity,
so keep the salary, I tear the mic, cause I love it,
there`s my life, you judge it, fukc it ____, I don`t want it

Good one, from the source of many of the best punchlines ever in rap music, the late great Big L.

"I'm so ahead of my time my parents haven't met yet."

"So we could never be a couple, hun,
Fock love, all I got for hoes is hard dick and bubble gum."

"Is Big L slow? Hell no! Bitches get focked on the roof when I ain't got no hotel dough!"

"You better spread with them 30 dollar kicks on
Or get whipped on, knocked out cold and pissed on..."

There are a ton more that I can't even think of right now.

One of the all-time best BIG lines...

"That's why I pack a nina,e[censored] a misdemeanor,
Beatin' motherfuckas like Ike beat Tina!"

And then breaking into "What's Love Got to Do With It?"

Sweet.

I got a letter from the government
The other day
I opened and read it
It said they were suckers
They wanted me for their army or whatever
Picture me givin's a damn - I said never.....

Blew up, who shot
What, who, the bazooka was who
And t my rescue, it was the S1W's

He seen crabs with SPEARS AND INDIAN DRUMS!

I'll probably get banned for including House of Pain in this thread, but I always got a kick out of these lines, and they sound pretty good, too. Maybe not my favorite, but the first thing that came to mind:

I started this sh*t two years ago
Your girl started looking good five beers ago
So I might step to her
But I just want to screw her
I don't want to take her
I just want to make her
Scream out my name cuz the Pain's in the House
Bust a nut on her gut and leave a stain on her blouse
Pull up my drawers and she's all yours again
And if you got a beef, punk, you better bring a friend...

Heh, there's hardly anything in here from less than five years ago. There's so much good older stuff I wouldn't know where to start. I could probably even think of a few good Fat Boys or UTFO lines if I tried. Remember Mantronix and groups around that time? What do you mean, "No"? haha.

A favorite line off the top of my head is from pretty much the only ICP album I think is good, (which it is). "I banged it and banged it, this [censored] was absurd! Like she was Sporty Spice and I was some [censored]' nerd!" I'd post more, but ICP, while having tongue-in-cheek humor, is pretty graphic for 2+2.

Here's part of a verse that has been stuck in my head for decades, though: "Well, I'm Keith Cowboy, and you're my cow, so what you MC's gonna do now? There's gonna be a slaughter, and here's my plan, you won't even get bread and water, my man."

They sure don't write them like that anymore.

I don't know about the other quotes, I'll finish reading the thread after I get this one in there.

"My momma, destination unknown, went out on her own
she was barely even grown and became
my momma
I never knew my dad, so even when the times got bad
I was glad cause I had
my momma
For so long she had to be strong, I know at certain times
she was wrong but she's still
my momma
It still amaze me, the lord had to help her raise me
judging from the way I used to be
my momma
the biggest player that I know, I love her so
hell, everything I got I owe
to my momma
Thank you for caring, thank you for sharing
your love
I guess that was your way of preparing your son
to be the one, and not the two
to make you and my daddy's dream come true
but what a surprise, car wreck left you paralyzed
the sheet was pulled over your eyes when the doctors advised
the family that you might not ever talk again,
but you're talkin so I know that you gon' walk again,
but take your time,
guess who's the inspiration for the rhyme...
my momma."

okay the answer to that one is kinda in the song.

I could go on for hours filling up server after server with rap lyrics that have moved me in one way or another but I picked this one because it's one of my favorite rappers' best verses.

Hehehe, like I said, I think one of their albums is very good, "The Amazing Jeckel Brothers," and the other ones I didn't care for. Reminds me of Danzig where album #4 is one of my favorite metal albums of all time, it's like moody blues-metal, but the rest of the albums are more typical in-your-face metal and don't do anything for me.

ICP is like the Rob Zombie of rap. The songs are like horror movies that are over-the-top on purpose and of course can't be taken seriously, which is a big part of the fun. "Another Love Song" is a good example. But, ICP's albums other than The Amazing Jeckel Brothers aren't anything special.

Hmmm, what's another classic...

Well Superman had come to town to see who he could rock
He blew away every crew he faced until he reached our block
His speakers were three stories high with woofers made of steel
And when we boys stepped outside, he said "I boom for real"
He said, I'm faster than a speedin' bullet when I'm on the set
I don't need no fans to cool my ass, I just use my super breath
I could fly three times around the world without missin' a beat
I socialize with X-ray eyes, and ladies think it's sweet
And then he turned his power on and the ground began to move
And all the buildings for miles around were swayin' to the groove
And just when he had fooled the crowd and swore he won the fight
We rocked this bet with a 12 inch cut called Disco Kryptonite.
Well, Superman looked up at me, he said, 'You rock so naturally'
I said now that you've learned the deal, let me tell you why I'm so for real
I'm Cozmo D from outer space, and I came to rock the human race
I do it right cause I can't do it wrong
That's why the whole world is singin' this song.
