I would guess seeking help through an internet forum maybe isn't the best way to go. But then again I'm not a doctor.

heh, if you think that's bad, try playing PokerNOW with avatars on. One thing that might help is using a more s00thing table skin. This is mine:

dont ruin ur eyes, take more breaks and focus on something kinda far, and if u play daily i recommend one complete day out of the week for resting ur eyes completely(not looking at the computer screen once))

Eyedrops + focusing on a distant object should help some. Read a book for awhile away from the computer.

Sleep is also your friend.

My eyes are EXTREMELY sensitive to light, smoke, fans, eyedrops, under-water, EVERYTHING etc.

My suggestions....
1. Refresh rate as high as it can go on your monitor.
2. Light on various sides of the monitor. This helped me the most. Lamp to the side of the monitor, overhead light, lamp behind me. A well-lit room REALLY eases the eye-strain for me.
3. Focus away from the monitor occasionally.
4. Tinted-filters. Just a special tinted-window that fits over the screen. Costs $20 or so at Office-Max or Comp-USA.
It's one thing to adjust the brightness (which you can try doing also) but these tinted-filters helped me also.

But my big one is still the well-lit room bit.
Before I set the different lamps up my eyes would tear up within a few minutes. I tried a zillion different brightness-settings, etc.
But after setting up the extra lights I have virtually ZERO eye-strain problems with my monitor.

thanks everybody, i've been playing in the dark, and a littele more lighting helps a lot. it's not really bad at all, but i'd like to keep it that way. it was at the end of a particularly long sesh that i made this post, and my allergies were not helping things

How close are you to the monitor?

I find it is best to keep your eyes at least 4 feet away.

Eclipse Workstation Light (http://www.onetech.net/)

Can't recommend this strongly enough. It's not just a cute gimmick sold by advertising hype; it really makes a big difference.

Maybe I'm silly but all of their lights appeared to be for crts, what about lcd monitors?

I changed to LCD monitors and it has helped tremendously.

The one called "Workstation Light" is for LCD monitors. It sits right on top of my Samsung 213T.

I bought mine from ThinkGeek.com (http://www.thinkgeek.com/cubegoodies/lights/3903/action/20f696d/). Shipping was very fast ... sent out next day.

That is NOT an affiliate link, just a link to some pictures of the light in use on flat panels.
