View Full Version : Going Pro! My Favorite Post

My absolute favorite post appears on one or another of the 2+2 forums at least every couple of weeks. It goes sort of like this:

Going Pro

I have decided to go Pro!
I am (x)teen years old.
I only went to college because my mother made me.
I can’t decide on a major.
I hate collage.
I have no intersts, skills, or experience, and poker is more fun than working.
I have played on line for 3 months. (Instead of going to class or doing homework.)
That stats course was eating me up anyway.
Why do they make you take Psych101? (That’s not a science!)
I won 53% ITM in SNGs and a MTT last week.
I am already making more than I did at McDonalds. (substitute fast food joint of choice.)
Driving up to my WPT events in a new Ferrari would be the bomb! I think I’ll buy one with my winnings.
My budget shouldn’t be important, I can just eat in the casino buffet out of today’s profit.
How do I convince mom to support me while I get started instead of wasting the money on college?
Where is the best place to move to, to play? (I can’t decide between Mass, NJ, or LV.)
Is B&M poker as easy as this on line stuff?
Any advice from REAL pros wood be good. None of you e-players though, I only want to hear from people who have been on TV.

TIA

Chum

Footnotes:
Mis-spellings intentional.
Names changed to protect the guilty.
Chum is cut up bloody pieces of dead fish thrown in the water to attract sharks.

Nice.

That was dangerously satiricly* accurate.

Shark Chum (http://www.newenglandsharks.com/chumming.htm)

I think I am seriously going to start calling everyone chum. My generic endearment for everyone, like when old guys call ya chief.
"Whats up Chum"
"Aw, he's my chum"
"Lets go fishing, Chum"

You might want to add "Please stake me". /images/graemlins/smile.gif

You'll never see a stake me post without 200 or more words on how good I am, followed by another 100 on why I needed every last cent from my roll for some real life issue. then here comes the hook, stake me?

The good ones are much better than any "turning pro" post.

Hay guyz I won 4th place in the last King of the Zoo and I'm 60% ITM in the $6 turbo SNGs at Stars for the last three days. I think I'm gonna quit my job to play fulltime.

I just need someone to stake me the 200 BBs I need to play the $15/30 short tables at Party. I will totally pay you back when I win the big weekend tournament later this month.

Somehow, I just don't think the shoe fits, BK. Besides, you I might stake.

I did this last summer (summer job between undergrad and grad school, actually posted here looking for advice lol) I was able to pay my entire summer living expenses paid for by the end of june, however it wasn't as fun as i thought it would be. I was playing 35-40 hours/week to get 160-200 SNG's in a week, let me tell you your head hurts after watching 4 tables for 8 hours a day lol. I barely even played in july and august because i got "burnt out" it just wasn't fun anymore. I still really like poker, but never want it to be my main source of income. Hoping to get a summer internship at the Federal reserve board in DC so if anyone is subletting let me know /images/graemlins/smile.gif No way would i ever condone dropping out of school, it's just not worth it.

And the problem with any of this (besides being unwilling to take advice from ALL good players) is?

Pure coincidence. I had not seen it until I saw your link, and have not read it carefully yet.

A note for BK, ilya, profit... I am not making fun of people who have made or are making legitimate efforts to go pro, who have given reasonable consideration to the lifestyle, the costs, the effect on bankroll of ordinary living expenses, insurance, car and house payments, etc, and who have a demonstrated track record of results to show that they can make money over the long term playing poker. Nor am I making fun of their posts discussing the subject. There are some very good threads on these forums on the subject.

There are also some "I'm going pro" posts by idiots who have considered none of the above, and spent no time reading the good threads on the subject. Of them I am making fun.

As I told Byron, The shoe very obviously does not fit in his case.

So much for trying to explain humor. It never works anyway.

Doc

I thought your post was funny, it does unfortunately describe me fairly accurately, but if I do ever have to go back to work I'll be able to look back on a great experience attempting to earn a living doing something that I love.

I do smile at all the wanna go pro posts though, if you wanna go pro just do it, how can people you've never met before advise you on if you're gonna make it or not? It's not like it's even a huge risk to give it a go. I watched some news report today about the swarms of locusts eating up huge amounts of crops in africa at the moment. Those people have got real problems, even if i turn out to be the worlds worst poker pro my kid's still lucky enough to be born in a country were she's never gonna starve. If I end up flipping burgers in McDonalds I'll still be happy that I gave it a shot.

My post was poorly worded. I meant that the link was posted 12 hours after Dr. Physic started his thread. (Therefore, obviously Dr. Physic hadn't read it, because it hadn't been posted yet.)

I just found it amusing, that's all.

Funnies part is one of the most respected posters on the forum, Dynasty, turned pro after exactly 17 hours of B&M stud experience in Foxwoods. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

There are some of us who are really struggling with this issue. I myself would like to turn pro!!! I have been play for a little over 6 months now and my itm is at least 13%. I will admit that my roi is struggling now at just a little over .05%, but that is just because my bankroll is currently limited due to my heroin addiction. However, I know I can play with the best. I know I am only loosing because I am playing lower stakes where the compitition sucks and players just keep sucking out on me. plus, I don't know if I should quit my job right now because we will not have health insurance. Should that be a concern? currently my wife and I are both healthy and are two sons are doing well. If one of them got sick often I be more concerned, but still, is this something I should worry about?

Anyway, I realy do feel I could go pro!! could anyone stake me enough money to play the 215 tables at stars? I am thinking that just 20 buy-ins should be enough. Please?

Just because some people are more spontaneous than you, Doc, doesn't mean they are not as smart and/or wise.

spontanaity and poker are not exactly soulmates.

Docs satire was funny, honest, and harmless.

There are lots of people that make the "going pro post" some are better then others. I think I made one myself one day. I have been "pro" for nearly a year now.

The cold facts are that being a pro poker player is actualy more then just being a good poker player. You can be the best in the world and fail because you have terrible money managment skills, or dont know BR limitations.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and a little razzing of the "newbies" is called for and good for them. Anyone that cant handle a joke on them, probably doesnt have what it takes to deal with a bad swing either.

Just thought someone should stick up for Doc, his post was funny as hell, and I have been saying "nh Chum" every time I get drawn out on since the post. They reply "thank you", I get to insult and keep my cool table image.
