Thanks to all 2+2'ers who were pulling for me during this. This was the $650 satellite to Monte Carlo, 27 entrants, the toughest touranment field I've been in, but still many weak spots. I feel I played a very good touranment, near the top of my game. HU again I think I played well but not as good as I could have. A little better and I might have won. Losing this was definitly the toughest lose I've ever had in poker.

Start at the bottom. Holdem Phil had been playing loose and agressive the whole final table, he is good. I think this was a very interesting match. First place gets the 16k prize package, second gets 1.5k and then phil proposed the winner transfer the loser 2k, so that too. All comments appreciated, thanks.

I watched the whole hu match, it was very interesting. I looked to see what you had when he bluffed the huge pot with ace high but it didn't seem to be included in this hh. Or did I miss it?

What a [censored] hand. My thinking was on the turn I was probably ahead. When he gets involved in a pot, he doens't like to give it up without a fight, however I didn't really know what he had. I didn't see much value in raising. On the river I thought since I bet out on the flop a very likely holding for me is a straight so he couldn't make that bet unless he had a straight himself. On the other hand, his river bet was just weird. I decided ultimately he needed a straight for him to make that bet but guess I was mistaken.

Brujita, I like your suggestion of betting more on the turn a lot, if he raises me then I can go all in on the turn. For the double shootout, heh, I didn't even have time to be pissed at that hand cause I was foccusing on this monte carlo at the time /images/graemlins/smile.gif. I'd probably smooth call with KK there too. It's pretty obvious what I have, I didn't have a read on the players. Against a good player who won't trap himself I'd probably push preflop.

Hey Bruiser,
A well played heads up match IMO. I like the fact that you were very patient and didn't push in with a lot of marginal hands that frustrated people would do in your spot. The only think I disliked was that you played abc poker on the flop. In most of these hands he raised pre flop you called, you miss the flop, and check fold. You have to get a lot more aggressive on the flop, make it harder for him to read you. My only comments are on 2 hand.

Hand 70: I'd check the river and let him fire to try and steal the pot.

Hand 56: Check raise the flop.

That's about it, too bad you couldn't get paid off with your AA hand I know how that feels. Again a well played match I'm sure you'll get the seat next time.

who wants to put holdem phil on a hand here? this seems kinda hard. btw i fold also and its probably not close, but i think the hand is kinda interesting.

possibilities:

nothing - i dont know if he would flat call the flop then min raise the turn on absolutly nothing. if he wanted to bluff with nothing he would do it on the flop usually it seems. also, when bruiser bets the turn, bluffing there would kinda reckless. last, if he does chooes to bluff raise the turn for whatever reason, he would usually choose a larger raise size. the only reason he would/should min raise bluff is if he is setting up an all in river bluff in hopes that he will fold a better hand than if he did a normal turn raise. that is pretty risky. overall the chances he has nothing are really small i think

naked 5: its hard to put him on a 5. the only ones i can think of are 5Ahh or 5J. its hard to play a 5 that way otherwise. if he had a naked 5 he would have been more inclined to raise the flop than the turn.

AA-JJ: very possible. he knows bruiser often has overcards on the flop, so often times he could let a card come off in position and try to trap. this is obviously more likely with AA/KK.

set: also possible. the flop play is possible, the turn raise size is ok since it leaves bruiser with less behind than is in the pot, and the river is possible.

J10/JQ/JA/JX: possible. he beats about half of these

Not sure I understand your 6k bet on the river on hand 17. After he checked the turn and the river, I'm guessing you ruled out a straight for him and put him on something like top pair on the flop (89, A8). But from phil's point of view, your line looks like AK as much as QQ/JJ/1010. So I really don't see you getting called by anything you beat when that ace falls, plus he might try a checkraise bluff, and your QQ has pretty good showdown value.

Also, he folded almost every time you put in a third bet (i.e. you bet, he bluff raises, you push, he folds), so I think I would have put a little more heat on him and come back over the top of him a little more. And some check-raise bluffs for good measure...

Hand 17 is very interesting. At first I liked the way I played it even though I lost, I'm beginning to reconsider the line I took but I'm not convinced it's bad yet. On the flop a friend suggested that I bet more, I agree with that. At least 2700, maybe 3000 would be better.

On the turn I don't think I can safely fold to a check/raise by him so I'm very ambivalent about betting there. Protecting this pot is getting important but if I lose the whole thing cause he check/raise bluffs that is disastrous. Also he might try and bluff if I check the turn.

On the river I'm pretty sure I have the best hand, and don't feel he will check/raise bluff here. I think his most likely hand is some small piece of that board. When the ace came I bet 6k into an 8k pot if I remember correctly thinking that he will think, "hm, the ace came, maybe he outdrew me, but if he did why did he value bet so much? wouldn't he bet 4k there with an ace? he's using it as a scare card against me so i'll call."

I think if he only hit a small piece of the flop he would go for a check-raise. Instead, he probably either has what might be the best hand and is letting you bet unimproved paint or is just calling with the intention of bluffing on a later street when a straight card hits. My guess is that he was going to check-raise the turn and represent the straight. Since you checked behind, he was going to bet big on the river, except that he thought his ace had showdown value. The check when the ace fell was very suspicious since he knows that if he bets big, he can push you off 99-KK (represeting the ace), or even AA/AK because he's represented the straight.

Hand 62: Did you think about just calling PF with KK?

Why check 55 in the BB (hand 56), but raise 77 from the SB (hand 45)? Chip counts were virtually identical, so the difference must have been position unless you were just mixing it up.

Hand 48 (AA): That really sucked. /images/graemlins/mad.gif

Hand 43: I don't think I could fold A9s here. Usually call, maybe even push. Why did you decide to fold?

Hand 18: I probaly call the flop bet hoping to get paid off huge if the gutshot comes in and the villain has two pair or a set. Probably -EV by itself, but I like it if there is a chance of the turn being checked giving you two more opportunities to win: hit the river or bluff the river.

Hand 17 (QQ): Now I see why you didn't slowplay KK. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif Why didn't you bet the turn - scared of the 7 or just trying to induce a big bluff on the river since he was probably drawing to 3 outs or less?

Looks like you played very well and I'm not implying you played any of the above hands incorrectly. I'm just wondering what your thinking was...

Hand 62, I don't like slowplaying against this opponent.

I checked 55 in the BB cause of position, I think position was a huge factor against him cause he's so agressive. Also, he called every single time I raised from the BB after he limped. And I didn't feel like raising and having to play it out of position. In retrospect, I think I should have raised anyway even if it would have been difficult to play post flop, maybe discourage some of his limping.

Hand 43: I think this was one of my biggest blunders. He reraised me so much and I never took a stand. There was 4.5 k in the pot I think and I had 19k behind, I decided it just barely wasn't worth it to push. I don't like calling, I won't hit most of the time, even if I hit a 9 an overcard can come, just don't like calling here. By pushing preflop I think he'll fold some better hands and pocket pairs. Plus there's a good chance I have the best hand. Really regret folding here.

Hand 18: I'd be more inclined to call in position.

Hand 17: For thoughts on this hand see above. How do you get that he is drawing to 3 outs or less?

The check behind in h17 is a move I use a lot and I think it works great. So long as there aren't too many cards that could kill you. Sometimes that odd card just comes tho'.

I'm excluding the 4 outs to the split, and I didn't see the /images/graemlins/heart.gif draw. Sorry!

However, I think he would have played overcards + flush draw faster so the flush draw is unlikely. Thus, he probably has around 6 winning outs on average (plus the 7's for the split, unless the 7 /images/graemlins/heart.gif gives him a flush). 6 still isn't many, but it's much better than 3 - probably about 2 times better, in fact. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

6 outs on average based on this distribution with underweighting of /images/graemlins/heart.gif draws:

Ax/Kx (both hearts): 11 outs
Ax/Kx (no heart draw): 3 outs unless x is 9, 3 or 2.
8x/6x/5x/4x: 5 outs unless x is 9, 3 or 2.
PP < QQ: 2 outs
Overcards to board but undercards to QQ + heart draw: 9 outs
Overcards to board, no heart draw: 0 outs (very unlikely holding, though)

Also, good point about position on hand 18.
