Wow, i just got done lookin at rec.poker and man those guys hate Matusow and Arieh. Tons of anti-semitic stuff on those threads and just plain ugly accusations about Ariehs wife etc....

My question is do you think being Jewish has anything to do with the way the wider poker public treats these guys?? Hard for me to say it does(considering like 20% of worldclass players are jews...never haeard a bad word about Mel Judah...)But after reading some of the posts it seemed like alot of the people really did hold being jewish against these guys.

I cant stand either one of those jackstains. I had no idea they were jewish. Has nothing to do with it.

Of course it's just because they're Jewish. It has absolutely nothing to do with their infantile, boorish, assinine behavior.

I agree that it could be the fact that they're [censored] [censored].

I think it has more to do with the fact that they both conducted themselves as rude arrogant jackasses in the public's eye.

If someone of (insert X race here other than your own) walked by you and spit in your face, and you thought he was a dick, would that make you racist? Goddamn, this type of overly sensitive stuff is sad.

I think it's probably more a case of not liking Arieh & Matusow and therefore throwing out a few choice antisemitic-sounding terms directed specifically at them. Like if you happen to not like a particular woman you call her a bit*h. Doesn't mean you dislike all women, but you still threw out a derogatory name for a woman. Likewise with this I'd guess.

Interesting avatar zaxx. Care to explain what it means?

I think it's a bit of both.

Do people "hate" them because they are jewish- probably a couple, but not the vast majority. As a fellow jew, I think they are hated cause they come off as cocky pieces of dog poop.

Having said that, these are "anonymous" internet boards. Many people probably say things, and act a certain way that they wouldn't in their real life. I am sure these is some anti-semitism out there, and they fuel it by picking on players they don't like.

Personally, I'm glad we have a lot of Jewish players. It means too busy to be out there controlling the banking and media in the country. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's his anti-nonsemite symbol. But I won't discuss it further because there's enough of that on the political forum.

Most Jews are too proud to start sobbing like a little girl becase they lost a poker tournament. Mike Matusow is a disgrace to the Jewish people.

Hated em both. Didn't know they were Jewish. Don't care either. There's enough anti-semitism out there without making it up.

I don't See Barry Greenstein catching much flak. Any clue WHY?

Greenstein is Jewish? Get outta here!

Excellent point about Greenstein. Classy guy, excellent player, and he's well-respected regardless of his faith. I have to echo everyone else's sentiment on this one.

How in the world would anyone know these guys are Jewish? "Anti-Semitism" is perhaps the most abused negative label in the English language. Just try questioning America's unconditional support for Israel, it's used as a bludgeon to silence free speech.

YA kinda hard to not notice that Matusow is Jewish considering the CHAI(two hebrew letters that sort of represent g-ds name) that always hang around his neck..but i guess not everyone lives in areas of the country that are heavily jewish so...

other great Jewish poker players:
Greenstein, Judah, Esfandiari, Berman,(big game regular owns like 13 casinos)Seidel, Fischman, Zolotow(??) The Shulmans, Sklansky(? ), David Levi, David Benyamin,Adam Scoenfeld... and Phil Ivey

JUST JOKING ON THAT LAST ONE LOL

Chai is the hebrew verb for live. As in, to live.

Are you sure that Esfandiari is jewish?

Well, I consider myself semi-worldly, but I had no clue of that, and never noticed the necklace.

Also, notice all the other players are well respected, except for Esfandiari, who has a mixed image at best, and Fischman, who most think is a tool. Both are for their actions, not religion/heritage.

YUP i heard he was an Iranian Jew...
there are tons of Jews that look similiar too esfandiari just that they dont reside in the U.S. mostly Israel, France, and whichever ones that are left(gulp) in Morrocco and Tunisia.....

Ya Fischman is a tool(my fav WSOP 2004 moment is Doyle just owning him on national TV) lol but he is a damn good player for 23-4 yrs old... Esfandiari has a mixed image?? Ive never heard anything strikingly negative about him..from the looks of things he has a penchant for stripper girlfriends, but then again who hasnt gone there at somepoint in their lives/??

Daliman

eh, lotta people, myself included, think he acts like an ass on TV, treats others on TV disrespectfully(What do you have TJ? No, I mean, what are your actual 2 cards?" Without a hint of kiddingness or a smile.), and then , ya the whole Viper-driving, 5g night at ghost bar drinking thing too.

Personally, I don't really think he's that great a player, either. He's solid and aggressive, but nothing fantastic. His WPT win he got run over by the deck at the right time, WSOP win, not sure as it wasn't shown,(I don't think).

Fischman is decent, has good tourney skills, but is not great in my opinion, but I'd stake him before Esfandiari anyday.

P.S. I whomped on Fischman in 10-20 on UB. I'm sure he's STILL having problems recovering financially.....

ya actually i watch him play (empty seat 88) at times and am wholly unimpressed ...Always 8 or better limit Omaha..

Come on, you mean the first reason that came to your mind as to why the poker public can't stand these two guys would be because they are Jewish?! Give us a break.

What's so funny about the prospect of Ivey being Jewish? Is it because he's black? Racist motherfuckers.

I'm Jewish and I have to second the motion about Barry. He wins and loses with class. He'll post about his mistakes. He made some dough, so he gives his poker winnings away. Very good mensch.

Matasow and Fischman are not good reps for us. Plus they are not good role models for poker in general.
