View Full Version : 4-handed 10-20 hand; Well Played?

02-04-2002, 03:23 PM
I'm playing 10-20 hold 'em online. I have Ah3h on the button and the game is shorthanded with lots of preflop raising (4 players, but much of the raising and reraising is manaical with J10o or KJo). UTG folds, I'm next and raise. The SB calls and the BB makes it $30. I call. Now the SB caps. All call. 3 players, $120 pot. Flop comes Q-3-2r with one heart, giving me a pair and a running draw. Checked to BB who bets, I raise, SB folds, BB reraises. I call. 2 players, $180 pot. Turn is a 5, he bets, I call. I think there is a good chance he has AK here and my 3's may win. Plus, the pot is very large. Still two of us, $220 pot. River comes and offsuit ace. He bets, I raise. He calls. Comments appreciated, and results to follow.

He turns over AQ for top two and takes it down (I was surprised he didn't reraise, but I guess he figured me for a set?). So basically I was drawing next to dead and I'm wondering if I played this too aggressively, or if I should have folded the turn. Any advice on the play of the hand or shorthanded concepts that apply appreciated.

BE WEARY OF RAISES FROM THE BLINDS EVEN IN A GAME LIKE THAT. I HAD HIM ON KK, BUT I STILL WOULD HAVE JUST CALLED....

If you have him on KK, why just call? This isn't a rib on you at all, I'm just really interested in your thought process here as I greatly respect your posts. It seems to me like shorthanded is all about small edges and maximinzing your bets. 5 or 10 lost bets definitely add up. Just curious what your criteria is for a river raise here or in similar spots, and why. Thanks a lot for your insight, u have helped my game.

My 2 cents

"I think there is a good chance he has AK here and my 3's are good"

If you are basing this on his previous play than this is ok. Have you seen him make these ultra agressive type plays? Against these type players if I flop a pair and draw I'll just let him do the betting, then pounce when they show weakness (usually the river). That seems to work the best for me. I'll even slowplay top pair, and checkraise or raise the turn. Free cards arent as important in SH.

On the river you have to assume you have the best hand and raise.

I think you played the hand just fine. FWIW, I don't consider raising with KJ or even JT in a four-handed game to be maniacal.

Me neither. How about reraising with them?

I think you played the hand perfect IMHO...I believe that your opponent did not 3 bet because he was afraid of the 4 str8 on board...which is what makes that raise such a good value...You're getting full value on your hand, and most players will be afraid to 3 bet even top 2 there, because it's a win one, lose two situation because if you have the 4 you will cap...

better luck next time,

Peter

Actual hand from my first-ever shot at $30/60: I came in on a Sunday morning and the only game going that's bigger than $4/8 is a four-handed $30/60 game (I play $15/30 about four times a week). I watch the game, decide that there are at least two live ones, and I buy in for a rack to see what happens. I win early, and this hand crops up while we're still five-handed. I raise under the gun, the next guy three-bets, everyone else clears out, and I call. Flop comes QJ3. I bet, he raises, I call. I check and call the rest of the way. We both have KJo for a chop. I'm not sure whether I think that KJo is a three-betting hand, but this guy did, and he's the one that left up seven dimes. /images/smile.gif

Larry,

As Jeff pointed out, a dime is $1000. FWIW, a nickel is $500 and a "big dime" is $10,000. I guess you don't generally have swings like that in the old $1-5. /images/smile.gif

This was in a card room. I only play live action, although I do have $32,000 in play money on Paradise. /images/smile.gif

Hello,Andy,

In absolute money,I do not have these hugh swings. However,if you speak in terms of BB's, I've had swings as much as 40BB's.

I've heard of the term "nickel" at my poker table, meaning 5.00.

Thanks for the definitions.

BTW,please define FWIW---LOL!

Happy pokering,
