somehow everyone has jumped on the google bandwagon and you hear people talk about "googling" on radio, tv, etc all the time.

i'm from the "old school" and i still always use yahoo, tell me why i'm dumb please.

i use yahoo for my sports/news/etc so its not likely that all switch unless there really is a good reason.

Isn't Yahoo powered by Google now?

google is the "IN" thing now, like, duh /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Actually ive heard google powers yahoo as well so i dont think you have any reason to switch. I use yahoo for fantasy sports and what not but use google for searching the web.

Yahoo was never "old school".

Even before google, there were far better search engines than Yahoo like altavista, metacrawler and hotbot (this wasn't even porn).

Yahoo used to completely suck. I'll try now. OK, so far, takes slightly longer to load than google because of all the frills on the main page. I searched for my name and it was reasonably fast, produced similar results to google. So it seems OK.

At one time google had a superior search algorithm to yahoo. Which made it more likely to find what you were searching for using google. I do not know if this is still the case.

No. For a while it was powered by AltaVista. Then it switched to Google, which is what you're thinking of. But they broke up acrimoniously. Now it has its own search engine, I believe.

IMO, still the case. Microsoft will be revealing a beta search powered by Yahoo!, but in 2005 they will have their own homebrewed version.

I use Google because I think the Google toolbar is more convinient than anything else. I really don't care which search engine it goes through but I like not having to go to a different site to search.

The altavista advanced search was wonderful.

Go to yahoo.com then go to google.com. The visual look of one site shows a dedication to search. The visual look of one shows a dedication to information (more broadly than search.)

I used to use Yahoo when they were still hosted on like somebody's student page at Stanford.

Now I use google, just because of the google toolbar. So easy.

they were the first to have implicit plus sign searches so they captured the market

Yahoo used to be a viable alternative because they organized
web sites by hand into catagories as opposed to just keyword searches of the raw web pages.

When the search engines didn't work too well, certain kinds of searches that fit the catagory model may have worked much better in Yahoo. Now, Google works so well that you don't usually need catagory based search.

Also, Google used to be the Yahoo based web search, I am not sure how well their current search works.
