Can someone explain "pwned" to me?

I understand the concept of being "owned" by an adversary. So when I first noticed the word "pwned" in threads, I assumed it was a simple typo. Alas, the work keeps coming up, and I don't get the origination.

Can someone explain? I'm assuming it's shorthand for something, but I'm not cool/hip/smart enough to figure it out.

A friend of mine tells me its gamer for "owned". This sort of typo is apparently like a whole different language to big-time net gamers. Then they use numbers, like 3 for the letter E and such...I just try to ignore it as much as I can. Nothing's more annoying than some guy calling another one a "n00b" and other stuff with numbers instead of letters.

Well I'm 28 and that type of typing and crap has been around since the old subnet and BBS days before the web and all this other nifty stuff, its all variants of ascii crap people used to pass around back then, before .jpg and .gif files even existed. Back then you actually had to know some command language to be on the internet, I saw the term in the early hacking community on BBS's back in the late 80's it has just be adopted by the gamers and idiots these days.

It's the same sort of thing you see with "the" being purposely spelled as "teh," because it's really easy to mis-type that way. The P is next to the O, so it's easy to make the typo. It's meant to be silly and make the remark more cutting because it's even more of a put-down when you're put down by an obvious moron. Kind of like it was cool for Beavis and Butthead to say your music video sucked, but if they praised it, you might be in trouble. A lot of the fun of the put-down comes from how stupid the person is who's supposed to be saying it. In a weird way, it's kind of a joke on yourself at the other person's expense, if that's even possible to follow. If total morons are putting you down, you know you're in bad shape.
