View Full Version : Folding more in the BB when SB calls

I often see in ring games when a tight player

calls in the SB against a steal raise,

the BB often mucks despite getting better pot

odds.

Does anyone use this strategy in a 4-5 handed

game with a hand like (67 or 78 offsuit) when

your in the BB.

Its much harder to gauge the strenght of the

SB's hand since they may be calling more since it is shorthanded.

Also Skl & Malmuth mention that it's part of the

SB's job to keep the button raiser honest..

The more experience I get in these 5 table online

max games, the more I think its better to fold these hands when the SB calls.(Assuming they are not extremely looose) despite getting 5-1 on a call.

Whereas I would call an aggressive blind stealer more if I could get in a HU situation getting only 3.5 to 1.

I routinely muck hands like Ace rag in this spot if I have any respect for the SB..This seems to work.

Any general comments?

I agree. What you gain in increased pot odds (when the sb calls) is not enough to offset the disadvantage of now trying to outflop two players (rather than one).

One of the reasons why you call a steal raise with a mediocre hand like 86 out of the bb is that often, flopping a pair (even if only second or sometimes even third pair) will be a fair to good flop for you. Obviously, flopping a pair is less likely to be as fair or as good as against two opponents.

That said, I would still call with a medium Ace out of the bb. I just wouldn't call with stuff like 86 off etc.
