OK so I heard this story yesterday, I'm not sure how much truth there is in it but was pretty funny and came from a pretty reliable source.

New Paltz Bob is a high limit poker player. I've seen him playing heads up 500-1000 stud at the Taj, and yesterday I saw him in a 20-40 hold em game. Horrible sports bettor, great poker player. He has been in and out of big games for the last twenty years, and always plays as big as he can afford at the time. His claim to fame is that he usually travels with a big black dildo and whenever something gets tense or out of line in the game he will throw in the middle of the table.

So he is telling me about this time he is in Atlantic City in 1996 and bumps into Johnny Chan. He claims Chan was just about flat broke at the time. Chan comes over and says he knows a real big sucker, known as Jimmy Jimmy, (why the guy has two first names I dont know) and that Chan will set up a Heads up match for 25k between the two. He tells Bob this guy is a huge fish and he should wipe him out quickly. He then adds that he would appreciate it if Bob throws a couple thousand his way if he wins for setting up the match since he has been down on his luck. Bob says fine.

So they are playing some big half 8 or better stud half Omaha hi low game for 25k. Bob is up about 10k after the high low stud, and they move on to the Omaha. But something isnt right. This Jimmy Jimmy guy isnt giving away a nickel. Bob is running hot and it seems like the other guy can play. Jimmy Jimmy gets hot in the Omaha and all of a sudden its back to even. So after about an hour they take a break and Jimmy Jimmy says, "this is crazy, somebody told me you were huge sucker, and I havent seen you miss a bet since we sat down." Of course Bob asks who would tell him something so stupid, and Jimmy Jimmy tells him that Chan had just come up to him and offered to set up a game with a stone cold sucker as long as he threw him a bone after he had won. Bob laughs and lets his new friend in on the fact Chan had just set two borderline WCPs up in heads up match knowing he was likely to get two or three thousand out of the deal regardless of who won. So the match ended, Bob laughed, turned around, and saw a frustrated Jimmy Jimmy shaking Mr. Chan by the neck.

Amyhow, I thought it was funny, there could be some bs mixed in there, but I got a kick out of it and thought I'd share.

In Anthony Holden's book, Big Deal, he talks about playing a tournament with Chan once. He basically whined all day and threw cards at the dealer. I don't think I've ever heard a nice story about Chan.

I have a somewhat funny Johnny Chan story too.

So I was walking to the poker room at the Bellagio. I spot my buddies who were siting and chatting with one of the dealers on an open table. As I am getting closer I see my buddy turn and sneeze just as this guy is walking by. The guy looked at his arm, appeared to have a funny look on his face and just kept on walking. I took about two more steps and stopped, not only was Johnny Chan walking past me but I realized that my buddy just sneezed all over him. Definitely a highlight to my Vegas trip.

The very first time I ever played poker in a casino was at the Taj in 97. My good friend was with me and told me to sign up for the 3/6 Hold Em game. I knew nothing of the lay out and promptly walked up to the lady working the board and asked for 3/6. Make that 300/600 =o) I was on the wrong side of the room and I swear to Christ she boomed "300/600!!?" into the microphone. I look around like an idiot and who do you think was staring back at me? Good ole Johnny with the biggest shite eating grin I have ever seen. Whether he knew I was at the wrong board or was sizing me up for his next meal I will never know but at least I got a chance to meet the man! (sort of) /images/graemlins/smile.gif

LOL now that is a [censored] good chan story.

So how did the game go, did you reraise chan with rags and get him to fold, sitting with the best in the world and beating him?

I'm going there Sat. nite with my future ex-wife. Maybe see ya there!

p.s. N.P.B. told me the same story this summer -- sounds like he needs some new material.

As much as that scene has been beaten up on this site, it deserves more. It sucked. What the hell would Chan muck for one more bet, from a short-stacked unknown punk-kid opponent?

I think the worst part of the movie was the end when KGB keeps talking about how Mike was on a draw and blah blah blah and then on the river he says that mike mises it and then he moves all in?!? like he'd call with a busted flush draw.

anyways I guess that is another thread for another day.

Yea. Not to mention that he's supposed to be some great NL player that doersn't realize he has this ridiculous Oreo tell? And no one ever spotted it before? Hilarious.

Not poker related, but the same premise:

I was told in an investments class by the prof. of a guy in the late 1980's who had an investment newsletter. He sent out thousands of them all over. On half of them, he predicted the market would go up, on the other half, he predicted the market would go down. After the next quarter, he got business from a ton of the people on the winning side and did the same thing. It worked for a couple quarters until i guess he was caught. Not sure if that is true either, but if so it is a nice scam.

Good story. I have heard many things very similar. Both about the broke part and the scumbag part.

isn't that SOP for a lot of the fly-by-night sports betting touts? play one side to half the callers and the other to the other half. wash, rinse repeat.

If you read the original script, Mike says he put Chan on a pure bluff, which makes his play more excusable and makes Chan's far more believable.
