View Full Version : Rake in 3/6 5-person (Paradise)

I've played a lot of 5-person 3/6 on Paradise Poker, and I have had huge winning streaks as well as huge losing streaks. I'm pretty much down the rake in that particular game.

How hard is it to overcome the rake? I'd say 1 out of 3 pots reaches $20, drawing $1 rake. About 1 out of 3 of those pots reach $40, drawing the $2 rake. (Thus, 2/9 of all hands reach only $20, but not $40. 1/9 reach $40.) And if anything, I believe I'm being conservative.

So, with an average of 125 hands played per hour, that's $60 taken off the table, every hour, divided amongst only 5 people. My math: 1/9 hands reach $2 rake. 2/9 hands reach $1 rake. 1/9*125=15 hands*$2/hand=$30. 2/9*125=30 hands*$1/hand=$30. $30 + $30 = $60/hour rake.

Let me know if you disagree with my numbers. The bottom line is that the average player is losing $12+ per hour to the rake...I am concluding that it is near enough to impossible to overcome that I shouldn't play the 3/6 5-handed games at all. Comments?

I think it depends on who your playing. If youare a heavy favorite I think the game is very beatable. But if you are playing relatively the same level of players then i dont think you can overcome the rake in the long run.On paradise if you don't have list of good shorthand players and who to avoid you could be in trouble (as far as rake goes) playing the 3-6 5max.

Indeed, while I tend to find the lower limit ring games (2/4 and 3/6) quite beatable, I noticed the 3/6 was very stiff competition. If you look at the 15/30 and 20/40 games, you'll discover a number of people there who also play the 3/6 shorthanded.

Since you're playing more hands and are involved in more pots while playing shorthanded you should probably be making more cash compared to a ring game. So if there is no rake you might be able to make 1.5 or 2 times what you would in a ring game (guesstimates), but if that is enough to overcome the 2 BB rake. I don't know.
