I'm looking to get a set of the good poker chips for our home games. We usually have anywhere from 6-8 people, we play with fixed chips and a buy-in rather than a cash game and I'm wondering how many chips to get, what quantities and what sort of denominations are sensible to play with. Right now we've been using the cheapo stinko plastic bicycle chips at $50 white, $100 red and $500 blue and we've just been dividing the whole mess of chips up evenly between whoever shows up. I think we'd like to make things a little more structured or at least consistent between games, so any advice on dollar amounts for chips and how many of each color we'd need would be great. We'd also like to change out the white chips with larger quantities when things get up in the higher blinds too so having a stack of change would be a good idea right?

any advice would be fantastic, thanks.

500 chips should be more than enough for 8 people. I would go with 4 colors -- 200/150/100/50 would be a good breakdown of colors. What chips you get depends on your budget: http://www.homepokertourney.com/chips_charts.htm

Getting no denominations (dollar amounts) will give you more freedom and make the chip set last a lifetime.

Check out: PokerChipReviews (http://www.pokerchipreviews.com/) if you haven't already.

An affordable step up are the "10 gram Dice faux clay chips" which have had good things said about them (especially considering the price): 10g's (http://www.wedoitallvegas.com/Poker_Chips_Dice_10_Gram.asp)

Also along the same lines: Diamonds (http://www.5stardeal.com/deals/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=10-1010-3004w)

Then you have the 11.5g's and they only go up from there... all a matter of how much you want to spend. The highend & customs will run you $0.90 - 1.30 with art/setup etc... per chip.

It's actually .06 each after 25% off. I picked myself up 1000 for $60. I ordered samples to check them out and they grew on me. Nice sounding.
