View Full Version : Please tell me why I should play Omaha?

Now I know I'm not a great Omaha player but I really don't understand why I should keep playing this game. The following hand should not be considered a bad beat story just a typical example of why Im so frusrated by this game.

I raise with Ad-Ah-Ks-Qs from mid position and get called by 6 players. My dream flop comes down, As-Js-10c. Tight player to my right bets into me and I raise and again get called by all players. 8c on the turn, all check to me, I bet and get called by all. 6c on the river and the person to my right again comes out betting. Can't remember why I bothered to call but I did and so did 5 others. Bettor calls out 2-5 for low and 5 high clubs (she originally bet on her pair of aces). Another guy has 7 high clubs for the high half. All these people have low cards in their hands and called my raise on the flop. BTW, one guy was upset that his 4-5-6-8 didn't get half the pot!

This was just one screaming example from the dozens of crappy hands that I saw within the 5 hours that I played. I hate to sounds like I'm crying over spilt milk but I really don't know why I should bother to play Omaha when I have a better chance at winning by flipping quarters with someone.

What in the hell am I missing about this game?

The hand you mentioned is exactly why O/8 is such a great game. Where else can you get such great action from loose players? You should send the limo for this group of fish:) According to your report, these 6 players seemeed to call a high hand flop with none of them even having a nut low draw!

On the other hand, if your goal is to never suffer a bad beat, then don't play Omaha ... or any other form of poker:)

Sandbagger,

Nice story.

Where was the hand played? If online, can you give limits and web site? If B&M, can you give limits and casino name?

Thx.

It's where the action is, as per your story. Fish love to draw. It'll take cream a little longer to rise to the top, but there's lots of it.

your hand certainly was very good. but dont compare it to holdem. think about all the cards that could come to hurt you for all the pot, or half. you only had a spade and then no pair unless ten of spades, or a nine and a low card to lock up the pot.

omaha is a grind game where your edges add up.

I'm new to Omaha8, but feel I m doing a lot better now.

Its not xpert-play, but what helped me to improve my game a little;

1. Normally i dont raise before the flop. (guess its wrong strategy, but dont fit my playing style) To let people in cheap in a game like omaha8 is not as bad as it sounds. They may catch a hand that will be a good no. 2..

2. I dont see many flops at all.

3. Avoiding the troublehands; say you start with A266 (A unsuited), and the flop comes 6-Q-K. Well you are in deeeep shit. To good to fold, and still in trouble.

4. Avoid hard betting/calling with only the nut low. The nut low alone made very little profit for me.

5. Say you hold AA on the hand, it will be xtremely dangerous(looks very good, but..)if there comes a lower set on the table(on the turn or the river).

6. When u make a full house, be sure that You have the higest one. In practice I think I made more profit starting with KK or QQ, instead of AA.

7. The smallest possible bet instead of calling could give you information, and the other players an oppurtunity for folding.

8. Im a terrible bluffer, so I have to keep patience till the right situation will come. It will come, be sure.

9. May be my strategy only will work out at low limit. Who knows? Normally I play pot limit.

10. Omaha8 is a game full of surprises, and i guess i fold the best high hand(or low) a lot of time at the turn if the betting is to high. IMO its a lot about saving money when its to risky.

Good luck!

"What in the hell am I missing about this game?"

Sandbagger - You are missing an appreciation for the game as it is played by your opponents.

Just my opinion.

6 callers of a raise, pre-flop.....

4th nut low, by runner-runner...

4th LOWEST possible flush, on the river.... with 3rd lowest also calling (backed into their low)....

4,5,6,8 in through the end...... and is UPSET ABOUT LOSING....

.... this is a GRAVY TRAIN!! Play this game FOREVER!!!

By the way- preflop, your hand wasn't great, but good (no low draw, but usually easy to get away from).
