I received this e-mail from Doyles Room (newsletter). Pretty basic for the seasoned player but still good stuff coming from these two.
Poker tip directly from Doyle Brunson and Mike Caro
Sometimes even great players can be aggressive at the wrong moments. Here's one time when it's generally better to check a medium-strong hand than to make a daring bet: You're heads-up and first to act on the last betting round, and your opponent tends to bluff regularly.
Many players instinctively tend to fight aggression with aggression and challenge this type of opponent before he can bluff. But remember...a player who bluffs too often is making a mistake. When you hold a strong calling hand -- but not an outstanding betting hand -- against an opponent who bluffs too often, you should usually check. Give him an opportunity to make his mistake. That's potential profit for you. Sure, there might also be profit in betting a marginally strong hand, but -- over the long run -- you'll earn even more profit against habitual bluffers by checking and calling.
